MAXWELL’S POV
I didn’t immediately enter the pack palace. I stayed outside for a while, getting some fresh air. There was nothing I should be thinking about, but somehow, I felt like I had too many things on my mind.
‘Why are you still hesitating about whether you should mark her or not? We finally found the one we’ve been waiting for, and you’re still not sure about her? Do you want us to wait for many more years before we find our mate again?’ Apollo was still angry with me. I couldn’t blame him because we had waited four years to finally meet our mate.
“This isn’t the right time to mark her. She doesn’t have a wolf yet, do you really think our mark will be effective on her if she still doesn’t have a wolf?” I answered him, which made him fall silent for a moment.
“Max,” I turned around when someone called my name. Damien approached me. “Why are you still here? Did you arrive earlier? Did you already take Selina home?” he asked one question after another. I looked at Damien with a frown. Did he really think I hadn’t noticed how worried he was about Selina?
Don’t tell me Selina could possibly be his mate too? How many mates was the Moon Goddess going to give her?
“I already took her home. Tell me the truth, Damien. You immediately went to Selina earlier after her victory was announced. Do you like her?” I asked him directly.
He looked into the distance as if he was still thinking about what he should answer. He actually needed time to think about it? Did that mean he possibly had feelings for Selina? But she’s my mate!
“Of course I like her,” he answered.
“What the f**k, Damien.” I couldn’t stop myself from saying it. He laughed as if I was joking.
“Why are you asking me that when I should be the one asking you that? Ever since we saw her in that forest, you could barely take your eyes off her. You even kept checking on her in her room almost every hour just to see if she was awake. So, tell me, Maxwell. Do you like her or have you already found your mate?” he asked seriously.
I looked away from him. As long as I didn’t mark her, no one would know that she was my mate.
I looked at Damien when he turned to face me.
“Answer me, is she your mate?” he pressed.
“You’re the one I’m asking, Damien. You were the first one to approach her before she could even leave the arena earlier. If you’re not interested in her then what? Do you want to play with her or make her one of your women?” He let out a breath and shrugged his shoulders.
“I don’t know why I did that earlier either. I can’t explain why I was so worried about her even though I don’t even know her. What is it about that woman? She’s wolfless but she’s incredibly strong and she’s really good at fighting. She’s not my mate, but it feels like there’s some kind of connection between the two of us. I don’t know, Maxwell. Is she really my mate or something more?” he asked in confusion, as if he wasn’t sure about what he was feeling either.
Was it really possible for a werewolf to have multiple mates? Damien and I were both future alphas, would we really end up sharing the same Luna?
‘No!’ Apollo shouted again. I knew Apollo also wanted us to have no one else sharing our mate. What would happen when we started building a family?
‘I thought you didn’t want her? Then why are you already thinking about starting a family?’ Apollo asked sarcastically. I could only roll my eyes at him. I didn’t know if he was on my side or against me.
“If she’s your mate, shouldn’t you be able to feel what she feels?” I asked him.
“Yeah, I can feel what she feels, but it’s not that deep. For now, I can’t say what her role is in my life.” What the hell was happening? After she rejected her mate, did the Moon Goddess really give her two mates? If what I was thinking was true, it was possible that Damien and I were both Selina’s second-chance mates?
What did the Moon Goddess want to happen? Was Selina supposed to choose between Damien and me? That didn’t seem fair.
“Have you told her about that?” I continued asking him, and he shook his head.
“If she really is my mate, shouldn’t she have felt me too? But from what I’ve seen, it seems like she doesn’t know anything. She doesn’t even look at me.”
‘Yeah right, he’s right,’ I muttered to myself. Selina already knew that I was her second-chance mate, so it was impossible for Damien to be her mate too. But what if Damien was actually her third-chance mate? Was that really possible?
Was the Moon Goddess waiting for me to reject Selina and then have Selina recognize Damien as her mate?
What was so special about Selina? All the men the Moon Goddess was choosing for her were future alphas. What was the Moon Goddess planning for her?
Was Selina destined to become a Luna?
“Hey!” I snapped out of my thoughts when Damien lightly shook my shoulder. “What are you thinking about? Why did you suddenly go quiet?” he asked.
“Nothing, it’s already late. Let’s get some rest,” I answered before walking ahead of him and entering the palace. Was Adrian not here? If I ran into that man, that bastard would get a hard punch from me.
I made it back to my room, but I didn’t see Selina’s ex-mate. I lay down on my bed and continued staring at the ceiling. Why was I so affected by what Damien had said? Was it really possible that the two of us were Selina’s second-chance mates?
What the f**k was happening?
The next morning, we woke up early to eat. I looked at Adrian when I saw him at the dining table. This was the first time we had eaten with him since the Mooncrest Trial started.
“Does that man owe you something?” Damien whispered to me. He must have noticed the way I was looking at Adrian.
“Nothing,” I simply answered and continued eating.
After we got ready to go to the arena, we left the palace. I saw Adrian again, and as I passed him, I secretly wounded him with my long claws.
“Who the hell is that?!” he shouted loudly. I simply continued walking outside.
“I remember now, he’s the one who led the others in bullying Selina. Do you really like that woman? What if she’s my mate, Maxwell? Will you fight me to get her?”
“What are you talking about? That won’t happen,” I answered because the moment I marked Selina, she would be mine. Forever.
