On the day Marcus came home from the hospital, workers were still installing a new elevator in the house. No one had to ask who it was for. Marcus sat in his wheelchair and stared silently at the construction. He had lost a great deal of weight. His cheekbones stood out sharply, and his eyes had gone dark and withdrawn. Sophie had dressed with particular care and sat beside him as she used to. She brought over his pills and a glass of water, then held them out to him. "Marcus, listen to the doctor and take your medicine. You always hated taking pills when you were sick. I used to have to coax you every time. Come on."
