" What did you just do?" I level at her as the tinted car drives off leaving us there. I raise my eye brows and stare at her in disbelief.
Caroline visibly swallows and shrugs.
" He seems nice. I think it will be nice for you to go out every once in a while." she says nonchalantly.
We are definitely going to go at it on the side of the street because she has clearly lost her mind. How dare she go over me when I clearly said no because she thinks he is nice.
" You think everyone is nice. I don't know him nor am I going anywhere with him. He's a stranger Caroline! Have you lost your damn mind? "
She throws her hand up in a defensive gesture and I can't believe she is pushing for him.
" You say that like I'm some i***t. You will be fine Hailey. It's just eating food in front of him and having a decent conversation. Plus, he was a stranger when you were getting in his backseat the other day too and you didn't seem to mind. It will be nice for you. Be human for a change." she puts in nicely like it's the easiest thing in the world that I'm making a big deal out of.
" Car, you think that's just it. I clearly said no and you gave a complete stranger the address to my home. Someone who held me up and threatened me at gunpoint!"
"Yeah, but he clearly apologised. It was clearly a misunderstanding." she says barely above a whisper.
" A misunderstanding? Pointing a gun at someone isn't a misunderstanding. Just how stupid can you get?" I level at her and her eyes water. " Since you gave him my address you better find a way to get rid of him. "
I march my way through the front doors leaving her outside and head for the elevator. I can smell the fresh chemicals as the place looks spotless. The sound of my heels are loud in the empty building as I briskly make my way through and I spot a few cleaners hurrying on their final stage of cleaning. I can hear sneakers behind me and I can't help but think this always seems to be happening with her trudging behind me.
" That's not fair. I don't think he's dangerous. You can also listen over dinner in a public space why he wants the house so badly as well. That's a win. " pleads Caroline beside me as we enter the elevator. I forcefully push the buttons for the top floor, feeling the smooth ascension.
" That's the thing I don't care why he wants the place that badly." I tell her rolling my eyes. "It doesn't matter because I bought it and it's mine now and I'll use it for whatever I want. He doesn't have a say and quite frankly I'm tired of this entire narrative that he thinks he has a say or something. He thinks we are connected somehow because of this goddamn house."
" Just hear him out." Caroline implores and stretches her arms out to me.
" I don't have to. I just want him to leave me alone. And I need you to go to your classes and stop trying to interfere in my life."
The doors open and she is still trying to plead her case.
" That's not nice. I was just trying to help."
" Help what?"
" Your situation. " she says lowly.
We are in my office now and I plop my bag down in annoyance.
" Help what Caroline? You can't even help your damn self. "
" That's not fair." she says softly.
" What isn't fair is that you're wasting money doing an art degree that you are barely passing."
" A pass is a pass!" she screams at me at the top of her voice.
" A pass is lazy. That money could be spent doing something else." I chastise her.
" Because we are so lacking in money that me going to university and getting a degree despite being a pass is the end of the world. You know what. It's my money! He left it for us, not you!"
" And that's the problem. Maybe you aren't supposed to be in charge of it."
" What?" she asks shocked.
" I will control that money and whatever you spend it on if I deem you unfit and you are unfit."
It hits her like a ton of bricks and she goes quiet. She looks at me unbelievably but I'm not backing down. Since she wants to be in people's lives then it should be fair game I am in hers.
" You crazy b***h!" Caroline shouts and I can tell she is furious.
" Passing classes doesn't cut it!"
" We can't all be perfect! We don't all want to be perfect!" she shouts with her hand at her temples. " And you think that sets you above everybody else. No! You're only a basic b***h with a complex and too much money."
" It's not about being perfect." I counteract trying to not let her words affect me.
" Yes it is and that's why Gregory duped you because you thought the son of Ecuador's prime minister was it. And it turned out he was a simpleton."
" Will you stop mentioning Gregory? It is tired. We never even kissed."
" I will mention who I want to mention! This is a free country!" she says animatedly and despite the situation I want to laugh.
" This is why you're unfit."
" What am I doing that make me unfit Hailey?! What exactly am I doing that doesn't meet your almighty standards?"
" Mom would agree with me." I tell her boldly and sit at my desk.
I can see her flinch from the thought of bringing mother into this.
" If you do this I will never forgive you. I will-"
Caroline stops to catch her breath and her cheeks are on fire.
" I will never be your sister again. "
" As long as you do things from my point of view."
She storms out of the place and I feel like a monster but it had to be done. A couple years from now and maybe she'll thank me.
