The cold reached the bottom of the stairwell, spilling into the chamber like water finding the lowest point. "Now, Gad," Doran shouted. "Whatever you're doing, do it now!" Gad pressed his bleeding palm flat against the altar's surface without another second of hesitation. The stone burned cold under his hand, then hot, then neither, some sensation his body didn't have a name for. The symbols along the chamber walls flared to life at once, pale light racing along every carved line, converging toward the altar in rivers of brightness that lit the entire space like daylight breaking underground.
