"How could anyone else know where Gad went," Kestrel said, voice sharp with alarm. "I never told the camp anything about the ruins."
"Then who did?" Rennick asked, turning to Doran. "Who else here even knows the details."
Doran ran through the list in his mind, exhaustion making the calculation harder than it should have been. "Everyone who left the outpost with Gad knew the destination. Everyone who stayed behind knew only that he'd gone south."
"That narrows it," Rennick said. "Unless someone talked."
"Or unless someone's been watching us longer than we realized," Doran said. "Vesk didn't need Kestrel's fires to know where the ruins were. He already suspected Gad would go there. What he needed was confirmation of timing, numbers, how exhausted we'd be when the real assault comes."
