The room went completely, devastatingly dead silent. The crackle of the hearth fire sounded like a series of gunshots in the quiet.
Saed froze immediately. The vibrant color drained from his face, leaving him a sickening pale shade of ash. Fifty pairs of eyes, including the sharp predatory gazes of High Elder Vance and Alpha Thomas, shifted instantly from him to Elaria and finally landed with pinpoint intensity directly onto Anna.
The key hung heavily against Anna's hip. It was an antique piece, forged from solid silver and engraved with the ancient runes of the Bloodmoon lineage. It was an object that only the Alpha himself was permitted to carry, as it unlocked the vault containing the pack's most classified documents, financial ledgers and tactical war maps. For a servant to possess it was not merely an anomaly; it was a glaring, undeniable breach of high-level protocol.
"I am waiting for an explanation, Saed," Elaria said softly, her blue eyes gleaming with the thrill of the hunt. She stepped back, folding her arms over her crimson dress.
"Surely a genius of your caliber hasn't outsourced the keys to the kingdom to a girl who cleans the hearths?"
Saed’s throat bobbed as he swallowed hard. His fingers twitched against his sides, his mind visibly racing to construct a lie fast enough to salvage his crumbling pride.
"It... it is a matter of administrative convenience," Saed stammered, his voice lacking its previous booming authority. He tried to laugh it off but the sound came out as a pathetic, strangled wheeze.
"The archives required... restructuring. Dusting. I gave her the key to fetch a specific set of historical ledgers for the Elders."
"Dusting?" High Elder Vance stepped forward, his heavy brow furrowed in deep suspicion. He looked at the key, then at Saed’s sweating forehead.
"You gave the master key of the Bloodmoon archives to an unranked maid for dusting, Saed? That vault contains the troop movements for the entire western quadrant. If those maps were to fall into rogue hands…."
"They haven't!" Saed stepped forward defensively, his voice cracking slightly. His internal narcissist was panicking, trapped in a corner, his eyes wild as they darted toward Anna, silently pleading with her: demanding of her to fix this. To save him.
Anna felt the immense weight of the entire room pressing down on her shoulders. She could feel the sharp, calculating gaze of Elaria waiting for her to break and the terrified furious gaze of the man who had stolen her work for years.
Slowly, deliberately, Anna let her hands drop to her sides. She raised her head, looking Elaria directly in the eyes for the first time. The submissive mask remained but beneath it, a dangerous quiet resolve was beginning to take root.
"The Alpha speaks the truth, Lady Elaria," Anna said, her voice smooth, steady and entirely devoid of the panic that sat in Saed's chest.
"I am merely the keeper of his mess. I organize the papers so that his brilliant mind does not have to waste time on the trivialities of filing."
Elaria narrowed her eyes, stepping closer until she could smell the lack of scent on Anna.
"Filing? You must be a very talented filer, little bird. Let's see if you can file a question for me. If the silver plated ammunition from the western mines is locked in transit along the rocky pass... why did the manifest I intercepted this morning state it arrived in the lower valley three days ago?"
Saed’s breath hitched completely. He looked at Anna, his eyes wide with absolute, terrifying ignorance. He didn't know the answer. He hadn't memorized that part of the script because he hadn't even known the manifest existed.
The mirror was cracking, and the reflection inside was starting to look incredibly hollow.
