The High Council of Elders looked down from the grand obsidian balcony like stone gargoyles, their severe faces illuminated by the flickering orange glow of the burning northern ridge. The air was thick with the acrid stench of ionized ozone and burning pine, a harsh reminder that the war at their doorstep was very real. High Elder Vance pressed his weathered, heavily scarred hands against the cold stone balustrade, his sharp golden wolf eyes cutting through the rising plumes of smoke directly onto Saed’s trembling form.
"Alpha Saed!" Vance’s gravelly voice boomed over the shrieking sirens, slicing through the panicked cries of the wounded and commanding the instant attention of every warrior in the courtyard.
"The eastern gates are buckling under kinetic rogue fire and your automated defense grid has completely blacked out. Explain why your vanguard is fighting blindly while you are screaming at a laundry maid!"
Saed’s breath hitched, a sharp pathetic gasp that caught in his throat. He looked up at the towering balcony, then swung his gaze to Elaria, whose flawless expression had hardened into an ugly calculating mask of sheer self preservation. Finally, his eyes landed on Anna.
Anna stood perfectly still, dwarfed by the massive imposing frame of Commander Liam. Her hands were still wet with harsh, gray lye water, the skin red and raw from her morning labor but her posture was unyielding. There was no tremble in her shoulders and no terror in her eyes. For the first time in five years, she looked entirely detached from the pack that had consumed her youth.
"Elder Vance," Saed called out. His voice shook on the first syllable, a high-pitched crack that betrayed his panic, before he desperately forced his signature smooth cadence back into his throat. He smoothed his tunic with a trembling hand, attempting to salvage whatever shattered fragments of his pride remained.
"A minor technical anomaly, I assure you. The girl... the servant Anna was tasked with inputting the morning logistics data, and her profound incompetence has triggered an automated security override. I am correcting the security breach as we speak. It is a temporary setback, nothing more."
"A technical anomaly?" Liam let out a dark, mocking chuckle that rumbled deep in his chest, a sound that vibrated through the stone tiles of the quiet courtyard. He stepped slowly to the side, deliberate and lethal, letting his terrifying Lycan presence fully wash over the space. The sheer pressure of his aura made the surrounding Bloodmoon warriors instinctively lower their heads.
"Come now, Saed. Don't lie to the High Council. Your grid didn't fail because a maid made a typo. It failed because you don't know the master cipher for your own kingdom."
"Commander Liam, you exceed your authority!" Elaria stepped forward, her heels clicking sharply against the stone. Her eyes flashed an angry volatile gold as she bared her teeth, desperately trying to protect her family's massive investment in this succession.
"This is a domestic issue of the Bloodmoon Pack! The master key was found on this unranked girl's hip yesterday. If the ciphers are locked, it is because she sabotaged them out of spite! She is a thief and a spy!"
"Sabotage?" Anna spoke. Her voice was flat, devoid of the submissive, quiet lilt she had used to survive for half a decade. She took a single deliberate step out from behind the protective shadow of Liam’s frame, looking directly up at the imposing balcony.
"Lady Elaria, you personally stripped me of the master key sixteen hours ago in the eastern gallery. Your own lieutenant, Kael, locked the archives on your direct order and threatened me with the dungeons if I so much as approached the threshold. If the automated turrets are cold, it is because your vanguard is currently holding the keys to a room they don't even know how to run."
The courtyard erupted into a frantic, low murmur. Mid-ranking warriors whispered frantically to one another, their eyes darting from the burning ridge to the defensive towers that sat uselessly dark against the sky. The illusion of Saed's absolute control was cracking in real time, peeling away to reveal a hollow, desperate core.
"Is this true, Saed?" High Elder Vance demanded. His golden eyes narrowed into dangerous predatory slits. He leaned over the balustrade, his voice dropping to a low menacing growl that carried easily in the sudden silence. "Have you allowed a petty domestic dispute with a servant to compromise the security of a tier-one border during a diplomatic succession week? Are we to believe the great Bloodmoon Pack is run by a maid?"
Saed’s face turned an asymmetric mottled red. The narcissist inside him was trapped in a lethal suffocating vice: admit he was completely and utterly dependent on an unranked scentless woman or blame her entirely and risk losing her genius forever to the executioner's block or the wastes.
He chose his pride. He always chose his pride.
"She is lying!" Saed roared, pointing a trembling, soot-stained finger at Anna. His face contorted, all semblance of his charming Alpha persona melting away to reveal the frantic coward beneath.
"She has been embezzling the pack's silver reserves for months! She is hiding the encryption logs to manipulate the market and cripple our defenses from within! I was preparing to expose her treason at the banquet tonight but unfortunately, her sabotage came earlier to save her own skin."
Saed took a deep breath, his chest heaving and screamed the command he hoped would silence the truth forever:
"Guards! Arrest her!"
The silence that followed was deafening.
Not a single Bloodmoon warrior moved. The guards, seasoned men who had stood watch on the borders, looked at Anna, the woman who had quietly ensured their rations were delivered, their armor was accounted for and their families were housed. Then they looked at the burning northern ridge, where the sky was turning a sickening shade of bruised purple. Finally, they looked at Liam.
The Lycan Commander stood perfectly still but his claws had fully extended. They glinted like shards of polished black glass in the flickering firelight, a quiet promise of immediate catastrophic violence.
"I wouldn't advise that," Liam whispered. A slow lethal grin spread across his face, exposing his elongated fangs. His golden black eyes locked onto the nearest guard, who immediately took a step backward, his hand shaking on his hilt.
"Elaria, command your vanguard!" Saed shrieked, his voice cracking into a panicked pitch as he spun toward his fiancée.
"Execute the traitor! Do it now!"
Elaria looked at Anna, sensing the strange heavy tension in the air. She saw the absolute calm in the servant's eyes and then she looked up at the High Elders, who were watching the entire display with cold evaluating detachment. Elaria knew that if Saed fell, her family's bid for the throne fell with him. She smiled venomously, her lips curling over her teeth.
"With pleasure," Elaria purred, her voice dripping with malice. "Lieutenant Kael, clear the courtyard. Take the servant to the eastern gate and let the rogues have her."
Kael, a hulking brute of a wolf with a scar running through his left eyebrow, stepped forward.
"Move!" he barked.
With a synchronized clatter of armor, Kael and four iron armored Ironclaw warriors drew their heavy steel broadswords. The sound of metal scraping against sheaths ringed through the courtyard as their heavy boots clicked against the stone, forming a deadly semi circle around Anna and Liam.
Liam looked straight at Saed, then down at Anna. He shook his head with an amused dark smile on his face, stepping back just enough to allow the Ironclaw warriors to take their places around her, his eyes communicating a silent dangerous promise: Just say the word and I will tear them apart.
But Anna didn't look at the blades circling her. She didn't look at Kael nor did she look at the massive Lycan who stood ready to paint the courtyard in Bloodmoon blood. She looked directly into Saed's frantic cowardly eyes.
"You think you are cutting away cancer, Saed," Anna said. Her voice didn't shake. It dropped to a freezing whisper yet it possessed a strange resonant weight that somehow carried clearly through every corner of the courtyard, silencing even the distant rumble of the kinetic fire.
"But you are cutting out your own pulse," she continued, her gaze unwavering.
"The western mines transit freeze will hit the grain supply by midnight tonight. The secondary defense firewall will drop in exactly two hours. And when it does... you won't even have a wall left to stand on."
"Get her out of my sight!" Saed screamed, his voice cracking with an ugly, unhinged rage that echoed off the obsidian walls. He was sweating now, his hair clinging to his forehead in damp greasy clumps.
"Banish her! Strip her of her pack rights and throw her into the northern waste!"
He threw his hands in the air, his voice rising to a frantic pitch to drown out her prophecy.
"Let the cold take her! Let the rogues feast on her bones! Out! Get her out!"
Kael stepped forward, his massive hand reaching out to grab Anna’s shoulder. But before his fingers could make contact, a low, guttural vibration shook the very ground beneath their feet.
Liam didn't strike. He simply shifted his weight, his shoulder brushing against Kael’s. The impact sent the heavily armored lieutenant stumbling back three steps, his boots skidding across the soot covered stone.
"Touch her," Liam said, his voice a soft purring promise of death, "and I will feed your spine to the crows before your Alpha can finish his next breath."
"Commander Liam!" High Elder Vance’s voice cut through the mounting tension like a broadsword. "You are a guest of this court, representing the Lycan Sovereign. You will not interfere with a local pack’s administrative justice."
Liam slowly looked up at the balcony, his jaw tight, his eyes burning with an ancient dark fire. He tilted his head, a mockingly polite smile playing on his lips.
"Administrative justice, Elder Vance? Or a public execution to cover up absolute incompetence? I merely wish to ensure the prisoner reaches her destination... intact. After all, the Sovereign has a keen interest in the 'logistical anomalies' of the northern border."
Saed’s chest heaved as he pointed at the eastern gate. "Take her! Now!"
Kael spat on the stone, gesturing to his men. "Surround her. No weapons. Just move her out."
Anna did not resist. She turned her back on Saed, her movements graceful and deliberate. As she walked, the heavy iron armored warriors marched beside her, their drawn swords a physical barrier between her and the rest of the pack.
Elaria watched them go, a triumphant sneer on her face, though her fingers twitched nervously against her skirts. She leaned close to Saed, whispering fiercely, "Get the tech sages. Now. If she is telling the truth about the secondary firewall…."
"She is bluffing!" Saed hissed, his voice trembling as he wiped the sweat from his brow. "She is an unranked maid, Elaria! She has no power! She holds no cards!"
The iron reinforced oak doors of the inner courtyard groaned as they were hauled open, revealing the desolate ash choked expanse of the outer ring. The air out here was freezing, the wind howling down from the northern peaks, carrying the scent of blood, ozone and the unmistakable wild stench of rogue wolves.
Liam walked a few paces behind the escort, his hands casually tucked into his belt, though his posture was that of a predator tracking its prey.
As they reached the heavy portcullis of the outer wall, Kael shoved the gatekeeper aside.
"Open the gate! Alpha’s decree! Banishment of the traitor Anna!"
The massive iron gears ground together, raising the heavy spiked gate just enough for a single person to pass. Beyond lay the northern waste: a jagged landscape of black rock, dead trees and perpetual snow currently lit by the horrific orange glow of the burning ridge.
"Out," Kael growled, gesturing with his broadsword toward the barren wasteland. "And if you ever set foot on Bloodmoon territory again, we won't bother throwing you to the wild. I'll take your head myself."
Anna stood at the threshold. The biting cold of the waste instantly bit through her thin, threadbare tunic, raising goosebumps on her arms. Yet, she did not look back at the pack that had exploited her, nor at the trembling Alpha who watched from the high battlements in the distance.
She looked at Liam.
The Lycan commander stepped up to the edge of the gate, his dark eyes locking onto hers. The mockery was gone from his face, replaced by a deep calculating respect.
"The northern wastes are unforgiving, Anna," Liam said, his voice low enough that only she could hear. "But they are far kinder than the wolves who live behind these walls."
"I am not afraid of the cold, Commander," Anna replied, her voice steady and clear. "The cold is predictable. It doesn't pretend to be your family before it cuts your throat."
Liam let out a soft genuine laugh, a sound of pure appreciation. He reached into his heavy, fur lined cloak and pulled out a small silver medallion embossed with the crest of the Sovereign: a howling wolf silhouetted against a crescent moon. He pressed it into her raw, cold hand.
"The Sovereign’s territory begins past the jagged peaks, three miles north," Liam murmured, his fingers lingering over hers for a fraction of a second. "Keep to the treeline. Avoid the ravines. If the rogues find you, show them that. If they have any sense, they will run. If they don't... I will be right behind you."
"You are risking a diplomatic incident, Commander," Anna noted, her fingers closing tightly around the cold silver.
"Let them try to declare war," Liam whispered, his eyes flashing a dangerous vibrant gold. "It would give me something entertaining to do this weekend."
With a final, lingering look, Anna turned. She stepped through the iron portcullis and out into the freezing wind of the northern waste. Her boots crunched against the light dust of snow, her thin silhouette standing tall against the vast desolate landscape.
Behind her, the heavy iron gate slammed shut with a deafening, final thud, locking her out of the only home she had ever known, and locking the Bloodmoon Pack inside their own slowly collapsing grave.
