The hairline fractures on the ancient medallion glowed with a blinding, incandescent white.
"Please," Anna gasped, her fingers tearing at the snow as the heat reached a crescendo.
"Just a little longer..."
Snap.
The silver chain exploded.
A shockwave of pure, unfiltered silver energy erupted from her chest, blasting the snow outward in a thirt -foot radius and baring the dark frozen rock beneath. The agonizing heat vanished, replaced by a sudden, terrifying rush of raw, absolute vitality. Inside her veins, the slow, sluggish blood of an unranked servant transformed into a torrent of liquid lightning.
Her vision shifted.
The blinding whiteout became perfectly clear. She could track the trajectory of individual snowflakes, see the microscopic frost forming on the distant pine needles, and hear the heartbeat of a stag three miles down the ridge. Her scent, once entirely masked and nonexistent, burst into the mountain air like a wildfire of crushed amber, ozone and ancient unyielding gold.
A Sovereign wolf.
Anna lay on her hands and knees, her breath hitching as the sheer magnitude of her own aura pressed against the atmosphere. She looked down at the shattered pieces of silver glittering in the dirt. Among the fragments lay a tightly rolled, yellowed piece of parchment that had been hidden inside the hollow chamber of the thick medallion.
“What is this?”
With trembling clawed fingers, she picked it up and unrolled it. The handwriting was unmistakably her mother’s, elegant but rushed.
Anna, If you are reading this, the chain has broken and your true bloodline is awake. I bound your power to keep you safe from the Alphas who would hunt you or use you because they fear you. You are not an Omega. You are the end of their lineage. Seek the Blackwood Legion in the North. Liam knows the truth of what we are. Do not let them see you blink.
Realization hit her like a sudden rush of cold air
“Liam…… oh!”
She read the piece again.
"I won't," Anna whispered to the wind, her voice carrying a deep, resonant echo that vibrated through the stones.
"A bit late for the advice, isn't it?"
Anna snapped her head up.
Emerging from the thick curtain of the blizzard were three towering figures. Liam stood in the center, his dark tactical jacket dusted with white, his icy-blue eyes glowing with a terrifying feral brilliance. The two lycan warriors flanking him were massive, their hands resting on the hilts of heavy iron broadswords.
"You were following me?" Anna said, her voice steady as she stood up, the raw dominance of her new aura instinctively flaring to meet his.
Liam took a slow step forward, a dangerous, appreciative smile pulling at his lips as he inhaled the scent of ozone and amber.
"Followed you? Little mouse, your power spike just lit up every digital tracking array from here to the northern border. My scouts thought a meteor had hit the ridge."
"I am not a mouse, Commander," Anna said, her eyes narrowing.
"No," Liam murmured, stopping just a few paces away. The sheer force of his Lycan presence collided with her Sovereign aura, creating a localized pocket of intense static electricity between them.
"You're a Sovereign wolf. An apex line thought to be extinct for two centuries. And you've been doing Saed's paperwork for the past five years."
"He didn't know who or what I was,"
“I only just realized myself,” she said flatly.
"Because he's a fool," Liam scoffed, stepping closer until she could feel the heat radiating from him.
"But my lieutenants aren't fools, Anna. Right now, they’re tracking this scent. In ten minutes, the entire Blackwood Legion will know a Sovereign has crossed the line. If you want to survive the night, you need to come with me."
Anna looked at the shattered remains of her mother's necklace, then back up to Liam's piercing gaze.
"And if I refuse?"
Liam’s smile widened, sharp and feral. "Then you'll freeze or the Ironclaw vanguard will find you. But I think you're too smart to die in a snowdrift. What's it going to be, Alpha?"
Anna stepped over the shattered silver, her boots crunching firmly against the ice. "Lead the way, Commander."
