Crack in the door

2042 Words

Over the next two weeks, Kassie found herself checking her phone constantly. What had started as occasional messages about Emma had evolved into lengthy conversations that stretched late into the night. Daniel would text her good morning, and by evening they would have exchanged dozens of messages about everything from Emma’s latest art project to memories of their relationship to observations about life in general. *Emma made “butterfly pasta” for dinner tonight,* Kassie typed, attaching a photo of bowtie pasta arranged in colorful patterns on Emma’s plate. *She insisted the different colors represented different butterfly species.* *That’s incredible,* Daniel responded within minutes. *She has such a creative mind. Does she know the actual names of butterfly species?* *More than I do.
