Chapter TwentyThe labyrinth of passageways and twisting corridors was more bewildering than Gairynzvl could ever have remembered. Thick blackness lurked around every turn and at each intersection of tunnels the emptiness sucked at the light they carried as if it were a living entity drawing vitality from the glimmer and endeavoring to strand them in utter darkness. Without the light, they would surely have been lost. Even Ilys could not see in total blackness and as soon as they left the main cavern any hint of illumination from outside was devoured by the ravenous darkness. Followed at some distance by a growing group of childfey, who crept out of dark corridors and from behind the safety of large boulders to join the group as they passed, the Liberators proceeded in pairs.
