A dangerous alliance

The early morning was fresh with clear air, and sunlight stroking the earth, still pale over ancient stones, as Lena approached the old ruins that perched at the edge of the forest. Such ruins had forever been a place of mystery and legend to her clan: a place where the boundaries between the human and the supernatural blurred. Lena's heart pounded as she approached the meeting place. It was treacherous grounds for her—both in the metaphorical sense and the literal one. In her mind echoed the stern warning from Rowan: *"Be prepared. The truth might not be what you expect."* As she reached closer, it was silent in the ruins; the only noise was the blowing wind on loose branches. Lena looked around with alert senses, but she did not see any sign of Rowan. She waited and every second there felt like an eternity. The first trace of doubt began to seep in. What if this were a setup? What if Rowan wasn't coming? Just as she was about to turn around and leave, she heard the soft, slow treading on gravel. Lena's breath hitched as Rowan emerged from the darkness, his gaze holding hers. He moved with a silent and surefire purpose, the predator, the intent so manifest in each of his deliberate steps. "You've come," he said in a very low voice. Lena nodded, returning his gaze. "I know I said I would. Now, speak the truth.". Rowan looked at her for a moment, as though deciding what to do. Finally he sighed, haplessly waving a hand toward her, deeper into the eamja. "You need to remember, Lena: this is something that if I shared with you, is between us. If the pack ever found out I was showing you this, it could mean everything to me." Lena's heart was pounding, but she nodded in acknowledgment. "I promise. Rowan led her toward a recessed area of the ruins, where ancient stones had apparently collapsed into one another to make an area akin to an old enclosure, and once around a bend that would protect them from unwanted observers, then faced her. "The truth," Rowan said, his voice filled with a jittery tension that Lena had never heard in him before, "The truth is, our war is more than just in the name of territory, and it's beyond both of us being supreme. It's about survival—our survival." That look only saw Lena frowning with a mix of confusion. "Survival? I'm lost. What do you mean? Rowan's eyes grew darker, and he glanced away briefly as if searching for words. "There's something you need to know about our packs—something that has been hidden for generations. Our forefathers entered into some kind of agreement with an ancient force, one that gifted them with powers but held them in a curse. The bloodline curse was passed down, to both the Ravenshades and the Blackwoods. The words swam before Lena's eyes. "A curse? What kind of curse?" Rowan sucked in a shuddering breath before responding. "It's called the Blood Oath. It ties our fates together, binding us as enemies by nature. The curse is weakening, and the balance between our packs with it. If the curse ever fully breaks, it'll unleash something far worse than war. Lena looked at him in horror, shocked. "How do you know all this?" "My father told me before he died," Rowan said, his voice hoarse with emotion. "He was the Alpha of the Ravenshades before me, and he knew the truth. He attempted to find a way to break the curse without every one of us burning, but he never succeeded. Now it's my responsibility." Lena sucked in a breath. "And the attack on our camp? What was that about?" Rowan's jaw tightened. "I had to test your pack's strength. I thought that if I could weaken you, it might buy us some time to ferret out a solution. But when I saw you. when we fought. I realized something. The curse isn't just over hatred. It's over connection. Lena shivered. "Connection? What kind of connection?" Rowan met her eyes, his intense. "You and I, Lena. We're tied together with this curse. That's why I couldn't cast the killing blow. That's why I had to pull back. That's why I had to stop. We're meant to be enemies, but we're also meant for something more.” Something we can't escape." His words landed with the unspoken weight on Lena's heart, with that weird tug toward Rowan that she'd never imagined could be this powerful, this dangerous. "So what do we do?" Lena asked, her voice barely above a whisper. His expression gentled somewhat, and for the first time she saw vulnerability in his eyes. "We've got you find some way to break the curse together. If we don't, it'll destroy both our packs. But it won't be easy. There are forces that will do everything they can to stop us, and if anyone finds out about our alliance… He didn't need to finish the sentence. Lena knew what was at stake. If their packs discovered they were working together, it could start a war unlike anything they'd ever seen. But the alternative was unthinkable. Lena took a deep breath as her mind raced. When she had come looking for the truth, half of the way forward had not looked as threatening as it did now that she had found the truth. But there was no turning back now. "Okay," Lena said, firmer. "We go in both of us. But we need a plan something that keeps both of our packs in the dark until we're ready." Rowan nodded, eyes flickering with what looked like relief. "Agreed. Let's start by looking where the curse came from. There's got to be something in those old texts, something to key us off." Lena felt an odd sense of determination settle over her. This was her fight now, and she would see it through to the end. "When do we start? "Tonight," Rowan replied simply, voice now firm. "We'll meet here again after dark. And Lena… be careful. We can't afford any mistakes." Lena nodded, and her heart, pounding with fear but also excitement intertwined, knew that danger lay ahead on this path ahead on this path where she had found an unexpected ally in Rowan. Together, they would face whatever came their way, even if it meant defying the very fate that had brought them together. Turning out of the ruins, Lena felt that she couldn't rid herself of the feeling that she'd just witnessed her life change forever. A world she knew and all the rules that had divided her were falling down around her. But something else, amidst all else, was also clear to her: she and Rowan were bonded by something much stronger than hatred. And it would take all their strength to make it through the coming storm.
