(Apologies this took so long to get up, darlings. I had finals to take care of. Thankfully, I got a 100% on both of them, which is surprising to me personally because I'm going for my bachelor's degree in criminal justice, with a focus in crime scene investigation. Thank you all for being patient with me. I'm working the next chapter as you read this, and I hope to have it up soon. See you next time, lovelies!)
Ren sputtered before Eryn could continue. "Die?! Does nobody think about the feelings of the --" she didn't want to call them sacrifices -- "the women who have to carry the children? What if they don't love the one impregnating them?!"
Eryn sighed, interlocking her fingers. "The Sacrifice has no choice. From birth, they are raised to be a mother, and to love their Matron." She sighed again. "Things are different with you because your parents both died and I had to search the Earth for you." She explained. "Did you have any other questions, Ren?"
Ren stared at Eryn. Her head was reeling. She felt like she could barely keep up. Placing a hand to her now creased forehead, she sighed. "How are things different with me?" She paused. "And how does this affect things from here?" she sighed again, harder this time. She didn't like any of what she was hearing, but it didn't seem like she had any choice, seeing as she was almost twenty-nine.
Eryn grimaced. While she didn't like that she felt like she was pushing Ren away, but she had to be honest. Ren didn't know anything about their responsibilities, and as her Matron, she had to make sure that she understood everything that the both of them bad to contribute.
Eryn leaned back in her seat, crossing her legs. "You're different than the other Sacrifices because you were not raised as a Sacrifice. You know nothing of what we had to do, just to be able to save not only you but humanity as a whole." Her hands gripped the arms of her chair violently.
"Humanity? What does humanity have to do with what goes on between you and I?" Ren interrupted, understanding most things until this point.
Eryn sighed, softly bringing her hand to rub the frustration from her face. Without a word, she stood up and walked into the open concept kitchen. Reaching up into the cabinet, Eryn grabbed two tall glasses. "Thirsty, Ren, darling?" The way Eryn spoke her name made goosebumps rise on her whole body. "Are you thirsty, Ren?
Ren sighed and nodded; she was actually parched. "Is water okay? That's all I have for now. I don't use this house often so I don't have too many groceries." Ren shifted in her seat, growing uncomfortable as time went on. "Yes, thank you, Eryn." Eryn returned to the living room with the two cups of water, passing one to Ren before sipping her own and sitting in silence.
After half of her glass was empty, Eryn set it on the table beside her chair, before leaning forward to stare at Ren.
"As promised, darling. The whole story, from the very beginning."
