Chapter 2

I came awake slowly by degrees. I could hear the sound of birds chirping somewhere nearby. In the distance, I could also hear the thudding of several large paws and growls I recognized as belonging to my kind- werewolves. That meant I was still in werewolf territory. I opened my eyes and slowly sat up, supporting my weight by bracing my arms on the bed. The bed! I was lying on a bed. My heart thudded faster and I wondered if my father's guards had captured me and taken me back home. I discarded that thought as I looked around me. My surroundings were unfamiliar. Its scent was also unfamiliar. It seemed I was very far from home. The huge bed I lay in was big enough to contain four people. The room was large and spacious. The walls were covered with realistic wallpaper depicting wolves. A chandelier hung from the ceiling, bathing the room in a warm, soft glow. Thick velvet curtains covered the windows. At one end of the room, there was a home theater-size television, stacks of CDs, and a state-of-the-art sound system. This evidence of technology made me sigh in relief. For a moment there, I felt like I had been transported back in time to a beautiful antique castle. Gingerly, I swung my feet over the bed and put them on the ground. I had to grit my teeth to stop the cry of pain. Then the realization hit me. I put my hands to my face and inspected my body. I was definitely in my human form. It was hard to believe because I remembered Kiara taking over, the flight through the woods, the intense hunger that crept over me at the sight of the rabbit, the need to hunt eclipsing any other thought, Kiara running through the forest, our paws seeming not to touch the ground, her accelerated pace, my attempt to control Kiara's speed and finally the crunch as something- my front paws broke, and then nothing. I was surprised to find out I had phased. I couldn't remember the transformation. My injured legs were shooting bolts of pain through me, so I decided to lie back down to give my legs time to heal. If I wasn't home, I had probably been caught and sent off to William Knight. If that was it though, I didn't have anything to worry about as the man would only be pissed I kept him up. Marrying him was out of it though so would have to find a way to escape. I just needed rest and food. At the thought of food, my stomach rumbled loudly. I felt faint and dizzy as I realized I hadn't had a proper meal in a long while. Deciding to test my legs again, I stood up carefully holding the bedpost for support. I practiced walking, noticing that the pain in my legs receded bit by bit. The door opened and a beautiful dark-haired girl came in bearing food on a gold tray that was obviously very heavy. She looked at me, saw I was awake, and bowed deeply. She remained in that posture as if waiting for my command to proceed. She was obviously an Omega. "You can proceed," I said. She came towards me, placed the tray on the bedside table, shifted to a point I could easily reach, and hurriedly uncovered the dishes. There was a heap of eggs, bacon, and toast. It was probably morning then. The food smelled heavenly. My stomach rumbled again. My first thought was to question her about where I was, and who had captured or saved me. She bowed again and in one fluid movement turned to leave. I gestured for her to bring the tray even closer. She nodded to show she understood and inched it close to me. I grabbed her arm and held it tightly. "Who are you? Whose pack is this and how did I get here?" I asked. The girl stood there, a worried frown on her face. "I-I was just ordered to bring you a meal." was all she said. A wave of frustration and anger coursed through me. I yanked on the hand I held, upsetting her balance. Swiftly, I transferred my grip to her neck. "Whose pack is this?" I gritted out, wincing at the sudden pain that shot up my knees. Puzzled, she looked at me and began to struggle. I tightened my grip a bit. "I'm sorry, but I was told not to say-" "You will tell me where I am and who is holding me captive," I said, my voice giving out the resounding timbre of the Alpha command. I eased my hold on her throat a little to allow her to speak, but she didn't say anything. She had undoubtedly not been given the order to divulge any information. I tightened my grip again, almost choking her in my frustration. "Speak NOW," I ordered, and just as the Omega opened her mouth to speak, the door opened slowly and a man walked in. It was as if time had stood still. I stared at him, lost in his eyes. I felt drawn to this stranger in a way I had never felt before. I felt like I was floating away and he was the only string holding me down to earth. He was over six feet tall, with the most penetrating auburn eyes I had ever seen. My gaze ran down to his pale, sensual-looking rosy lips. His strong jawline spoke of character and determination. He was the embodiment of male sensuality. I could feel the aura of an Alpha emanating from him. Without a doubt, I knew that this man was my mate. All the stories and descriptions I had heard did not prepare me for the myriad of emotions coursing through me at the sight of my mate. "Leave." His voice came out deeper than I imagined and I breathed out. My grip on the girl slackened and my hand fell limply at my side. Vaguely, I was aware of the Omega nearly upsetting the tray in her haste to get away. She bowed deeply to the Alpha and almost ran to the door. She shot a last frightened glance behind her. The door closed and we were alone. Me and this stranger. The atmosphere between us was intense, something I have never felt before. I could see from his expression that he felt our bond too, but I would not acknowledge him as my mate even if it killed me. "You kidnapped me." I blurted out and with the way he blinked, I was certain he didn't expect that. "And..." I trailed off, as I watched him stroll towards me. His face had hardened and he moved half a step closer. "You plan to r**e me, is that it? I demand you let me go now. You apparently don't know who I am, huh?" He c****d his head to one side as if enjoying the way I was yelling. "I am Eleanor Lake, soon to be Alpha of the Black Diamond pack. I could go easy on you if you let me go at once." For the first time in my life, I was grateful for the status my birth gave me. My pack was one of the top five powerful packs and even though the guy might be an Alpha, I was certain he would be below us. Below me and I could use that to my advantage. I opened my mouth to say something else but felt the wind knocked out of me when my back was slammed against the wall. My eyes widened in shock. I had never seen anyone move that fast. He leaned in closer, his breath fanning my face. He smelled even better than I thought possible; an alluring musky scent. His eyes stared deep into mine and I saw them change to gold. I stared at him, entranced. His lips moved. "Mate." He growled.
