The Pack Run

1304 Words
It's the first pack run since my return and everyone I know will be there. I haven't shifted since before I left for Paris, and Becca is practically chomping at the bit. Since the pack meeting 2 weeks ago she's definitely been pulling out of the latency she was in during most of the time since we first saw Chloe two years ago. I haven't seen Chloe at all since that night. She's been busy with pack matters, and with taking over as Alpha. She's had a few challenges for Alpha from neighboring packs, but from what I understand she easily defeated them, and remains firmly entrenched as our new Alpha. I've been busy learning the ins and outs of the kitchen. My mother says she's going to turn over the reigns to me, but I asked her to wait until this business with Chloe resolves itself.  I finally confessed everything to her, and she's unsure if she's nervous or excited. I can relate. I feel the same way. When we all gather in the clearing near the pack house I'm much too wrapped up in my friends to realize Chloe had arrived until she was so near I could smell her and feel her warmth behind me. My friends fall silent immediately and I hear Josh's wife say, "Hello Alpha!" The others dip their heads in respect and I find myself turning on my heels to face her. The sigh of her makes my heart give a little lurch and my breath catches in my throat. Goddess, she's so beautiful. I'm speechless at the sight of her and it takes a full minute before I manage to croak out a nervous, "Alpha, it's good to see you." I lower my head as well. There's something in the pack bond that makes werewolves automatically behave submissively toward those in power - something magical, but mates are not affected by it. That's why at the pack meeting everyone knelt but me. Most of their eyes were forced to the floor so the only people who knew that I didn't kneel were the very high ranking in the pack. I have been getting looks from them for weeks now, but I've tried hard to behave as though nothing was different.  Chloe's voice is quiet, but there's an aura of power about it. "Olivia, you'll run with my parents and I tonight." It wasn't a question, and I must admit I bristle for a minute at the command. I nod, though, and turn back to my friends. Once Chloe is a short distance away their eyes all turn to me, and their jaws drop open. Sarah was the first to speak, "Liv...." Her words die in her throat, though, and she doesn't finish the sentence. I lean in and gave her a little hug. "I'll be fine. Really." Josh shakes his head. "Be careful Liv, they... aren't like us." I nod my understanding. "I'll be fine guys. I'll see you after?" It was a tradition with my friends. After pack runs we always met at one of the greenhouses my dad runs. There's sugarcane growing there, and a pond out back that we can swim in. Things have changed, but I hope that hasn't. They all nod, and I turn and leave them. I walk quickly before I lose my nerve, and when I walk past my family they look at me expectantly. My mother gives me a knowing nod as I walk past and closer to the front where Chloe and her family are gathered. My brothers and my father, however, aren't as understanding as my mom, and my father looks like he's about to sprint toward me to pull me back to my senses. My mother's hand on his arm stops him and she leans in the murmur something quietly in his ear. When I look at him he's staring at me slack jawed. I can only imagine his feelings - torn between concern and happiness. When I approach Chloe she doesn't acknowledge me, but she certainly knows I'm there. Her scent is so strong, like an elixir, and it makes me feel a little lightheaded and drunk even in the crowd. I wonder what I smell like to her, and does she feel the same way? She doesn't behave like it. She's too busy being the Alpha, and when she turns toward the crowd to speak her hand moves toward mine. She tugs me closer as my fingers entwine with hers. She's outting me as her mate in front of the pack, and I feel a moment of panic as she does. They're all going to know. I feel as though I'm going to faint, and when I sway slightly on my feet her hand moves to my waist and she braces me to keep me from falling. If holding my hand wasn't obvious enough, this is certainly even more so, and when I turn to look at her she's not looking at me. She's speaking to the pack. I feel as though I'm in a tunnel and I can't hear her words. It's as if the world has stopped and I'm aside from it. Her arm around me makes me feel things I haven't felt before - even when she kissed me that night in the kitchen. I can't help it. I'm in love.  When she stops speaking and people begin to shift she turns her eyes back to me. Our eyes meet for a minute, and she gives me a little nod of reassurance before she pulls her arm away. She steps back and removes her clothing and begins to shift. Nudity isn't something we find particularly shocking, especially once we're old enough to shift ourselves, but staring at her naked flesh I could feel something deep inside me start to build, and I had to wrench my eyes away before I could start my own disrobing and shifting.  My wolf slowly begins to emerge and take over. Becca's slow, and by the time we're fully shifted most of the pack watches impatiently. We can't speak, but I can hear Chloe through the pack link. I know everyone else can hear her too as she asks, "Are you ok?" I nod my head and lift the dark wolf eyes to hers. "I haven't shifted since..." But I don't finish that thought. I know the entire pack can hear our exchange, and I walk on wobbly feet toward her. Her parents are watching me with a mixture of confusion and worry in their eyes, and when she looks away from me finally she turns toward the pack, lifts her snout into the air, and gives a howl that makes my heart feel like it's going to burst with love. Then we run... Becca's faster than most. She outruns even Chloe's wolf, and I could sense her surprise. Becca runs and jumps and there was such glee in her that I step back and let her do as she pleases. I can hear her and Chloe's wolf Callie meeting for the first time through their mind link, and I know that Chloe has done the same. We left our wolves to get to know one another, and by the time the run was over they had returned to the clearing and they were cuddling together. We fall asleep there, all four of us, under the moon and stars, and it's not until the rest of the pack returns that we are awakened. As our wolves reluctantly pull away from one another and we begin to shift back to our human forms I can feel something strange tugging at me. Becca's reluctant to give up control, and once she finally does she says sleepily inside my mind, "Don't f**k this up, Liv. We love her."
