Chapter six

636 Words
Episode 6: The hallway outside Ward 12 felt longer than usual that morning. Ji-hoon didn’t slow down as he walked. The file in his hand was already open again, pages flipping faster now—not from habit, but from doubt. Something didn’t sit right. Not the injury itself. He had treated worse. It was the numbers. Ward 12 Inside the room, Hyun-woo was sitting up now, slower than before, eyes less cloudy but still distant. A fresh bandage wrapped around his head. The quiet of the room felt heavier than the machines around him. Ha-rin stood near the bed, watching him like she expected him to collapse again if she looked away. “You should lie down,” she said. “I’m fine,” Hyun-woo replied weakly. “That’s what everyone says before they faint again,” she snapped automatically. He blinked at her. “Coach… are you always like this?” Ha-rin paused. For a second, something almost softer flickered across her face. “No,” she said finally. “Only when people don’t listen.” Before Hyun-woo could answer, the door opened again. Ji-hoon stepped in without greeting. His eyes went straight to Hyun-woo, then to the chart clipped at the end of the bed. “Soo-young,” he called. Soo-young was already there, appearing from behind him. “Yes, doctor.” “Bring me yesterday’s intake record. All of it.” She hesitated. “Is something wrong?” “Just bring it.” Her expression shifted slightly, but she nodded and left immediately. Ha-rin frowned. “Is there a problem?” Ji-hoon didn’t answer right away. He moved closer to the bed instead, studying Hyun-woo again—this time not the injury, but the person. “How long were you unconscious after the fall?” he asked. Hyun-woo thought. “I don’t know… maybe a few seconds? Maybe longer.” Ji-hoon nodded once, then turned slightly away, eyes narrowing as if assembling invisible pieces. Something didn’t match. Soo-young returned quickly, handing over a file. “Here, doctor.” Ji-hoon flipped it open. Silence stretched. Then another page. Then another. Ha-rin stepped forward. “What is it?” Ji-hoon finally spoke, voice lower now. “The word accident doesn’t match the fall.” Hyun-woo frowned. “What does that mean?” “It means,” Ji-hoon said carefully, “you lost more blood than a simple impact injury should cause.” A pause. The room tightened. Ha-rin’s expression sharpened. “So you’re saying something else caused it?” “I’m saying I don’t know yet,” Ji-hoon replied. “And that’s the problem.” Soo-young shifted slightly. “Could it be someone intentionally pushed him?” “Yes, and a really hard push at that”Ji-hoon said. Hyun-woo swallowed. “How could someone do that?” No one answered immediately. ⸻ A Strange Detail Ji-hoon closed the file. “There’s one more thing,” he said. Everyone looked at him. Ha-rin frowned. “Not like this,” Ji-hoon said. “It suggests he was hit on the head before being pushed” Hyun-woo’s eyes widened slightly. “I don’t remember anything like that…” Ji-hoon studied him. “That’s expected.” Outside the Room Back inside, Ha-rin crossed her arms tighter. “So what now?” she asked. Ji-hoon looked toward the door, already thinking ahead. “Now,” he said quietly, “we have done our part by treating him…so its left for you to find out who did it and why” Hyun-woo shifted slightly on the bed. “Will I be okay?” Ji-hoon paused at the door. “Yes,” he said. “But thank God doctor Mu found something fishy, before it became to late, cause we were checking for something else while another thing was wrong”
