Chapter 6Aman and Roop didn’t sleep at all. When Lilavati awoke at dawn, they were both pacing near the door. Aman couldn’t wait for the sky to lighten; even Lilavati’s curses did not get the usual response as he soothed his wife. He described a triumphant return with the baby in his arms with the orphanage Madam trailing behind him in handcuffs, but Roop was too furious. She was adamant about leaving him today and never coming back unless he brought her baby back to her. In hurried sentences, Aman and Lilavati decided to go to the orphanage while Roop stayed at home. Roop was still weak and bleeding from the birth; Lilavati had to tell her, quite harshly, what a liability she would be if she insisted on trailing along.
