Chapter 21Iris had just finished giving her statement to the police when she saw Shabnam, looking totally bewildered and moist-eyed, being brought into police custody. A lawyer trailed behind her, whispering into a cellphone. Iris had been at the police station with Lilavati, Lakshmy, and Zoran, for the past hour. She had already given a long statement about her meeting with Shabnam and now she nudged Lakshmy, “That’s Shabnam, the one who tried to sell Piya to me.”
Lakshmy looked up. “Yes, I know her. Zoran, I hope we can make the charges stick this time.”
Flashbulbs were popping outside, and there was the commotion of reporters jostling for attention. A white woman with red hair was being steered through the door by a policewoman.
