Dinner ends

737 Words
The dinner ended not with warm laughter, but with the synchronized sound of chairs scraping against the marble floor. Julian’s father, a man whose face looked like it was carved from stone, stood up and adjusted his silk tie. He looked at Lucy with the cold, calculating eyes of a businessman. “A productive evening, Arthur,” he said, his voice low and gravelly. “The potential of our two houses joining is unmatched. We agree with your terms. Once the girl is done with her studies at HEC Paris and has her degree in hand, the formal marriage preparations will begin immediately. We want no delays once that milestone is hit.” Julian’s mother stood beside him, her neck draped in diamonds. She finally turned her gaze to Lucy, her eyes scanning her like a piece of livestock. “You have the look of a Davidson, my dear,” she said, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. “Study hard. A woman of your future standing must be as educated as she is elegant. We look forward to seeing you at the top of your class.” As the adults finished speaking, Julian stepped closer to Lucy. The air in the room felt suddenly thin as he leaned in, intending to plant a kiss on her forehead to seal the evening’s "success." Lucy felt a surge of coldness wash over her. Every instinct in her body screamed for her to pull away, and she hesitated, her neck stiffening as she involuntarily tilted her head back. But then, she caught her father’s gaze. Arthur Davidson was watching her with a sharp, warning look—a silent command that reminded her exactly where she stood. Forcing her heart to go still, Lucy struggled to comport herself. She squeezed her eyes shut for a brief second, swallowing her pride, and remained motionless. She allowed him to lean in, feeling the brief, dry pressure of his lips against her skin. It felt like a brand of ownership rather than an act of affection. Julian pulled back with a confident smirk. “Enjoy your books, Lucy. I’ll be waiting at the finish line.” The heavy front doors clicked shut, and the mansion felt instantly colder. Lucy stood in the grand foyer, her fingers digging into her palms, her forehead still burning from the touch she hadn't wanted. Her father, Arthur Davidson, turned to his assistant near the study, his voice regaining its usual tone of absolute command. “They are satisfied, for now,” Arthur said, not even looking back at his daughter. “You heard them, Lucy. Your education is the only thing standing between you and this alliance. Do not disappoint me. I expect nothing less than perfection before the wedding bells ring.” Lucy’s heart hammered. Once she was done with her studies. To them, her education wasn't for her own dreams; it was just a ticking clock leading to her sale. “Goodnight, Father,” she called out, her voice flat. “Goodnight, Lucy. Rest well. Your future is already written,” he replied, disappearing into his study. Lucy didn’t go to her room to rest. She climbed the stairs, her silk gown rustling against the gold-leafed banister. Once inside her bedroom, she locked the door and leaned against it, breathing hard. The mansion felt like a beautiful cage. She walked over to her balcony, looking out over the city. Somewhere out there, in the dark corners of the city her father claimed to rule, was a poor boy from the streets who had no idea he had become the center of her world. The rejection at dinner—and the lingering feeling of Julian’s touch—hadn't silenced her; it had sharpened her resolve. Her father wanted her to focus on her "studies" to prepare for a life of pretense, but she was about to study a completely different subject. She moved toward her closet, stripping off the designer dress and reaching for something dark and simple. "I don’t want the Vance legacy. I don’t want to be the 'educated' prize they are waiting for. I want to find the man who didn't even look at me, but somehow took everything from me with a single glance." "If he truly is a boy from the streets, then he’s used to danger. It’s time he learned that I am the most dangerous thing in his life."
