Designing his destiny

Next morning, Lucy’s eyes snapped open at exactly 5:00 AM. The stillness of her bedroom felt suffocating, pressing against her chest like a physical weight. Sleep was entirely impossible; the mental noise from the previous night was still buzzing too loudly in her head. She had resolved to go to the cemetery, but as she stared out the window into the bleak morning fog, she hesitated. Going back to the cemetery felt wrong. She had already stood by that headstone just a week ago, pouring her grief into the silent earth, and it hadn't stopped the walls from closing in. She didn't need a monument of grief today; she needed a sanctuary. Changing her mind, she threw on a simple outfit and headed downstairs, running toward the only true haven left to her on the estate: her late mother’s abandoned conservatory at the edge of the grounds. As she crossed the long, echoing hallway toward the rear exit, Arthur Davidson’s bedroom door swung open. The billionaire tycoon stood there in his silk robe, looking completely startled to see his daughter awake before the sun. “Lucy?” Arthur asked, his deep voice thick with sleep and instant concern. “Why are you up at this hour? Where are you heading?” “Father, I was just going out to Mother’s old greenhouse,” she said softly, keeping her eyes anchored to his lapel to hide her anxiety. “I... I just wanted to sit among her old things for a little while. Everything in the house feels so loud today, and I miss her.” Arthur’s strict, immovable CEO persona melted away instantly. The fierce corporate titan vanished, leaving behind a man who was merely a grieving husband. To Lucy's absolute shock, tears welled in his eyes. He pulled her into a tight, crushing hug, his shoulders shaking as a ragged sob escaped his throat. “I miss her every single day too, my precious daughter,” he choked out, wiping his face with the back of his hand. “You must never feel alone. You know what? Let me come down there with you. We’ll unlock it together.” Panic flared hot in Lucy’s chest. If he came, her chance to speak freely would be completely destroyed. She wouldn't be able to voice the forbidden secrets weighing down her conscience. “No, Father,” she protested quickly, pulling back gently. “Please. I need to do this by myself today. I just need a moment alone with her memory.” Arthur frowned, a ghost of his usual authority returning. “Lucy, it's pitch black outside and that side of the estate is isolated. I’m not letting you wander out there alone. Just give me five minutes to get dressed.” Before she could argue further, Arthur’s encrypted corporate phone buzzed violently. He answered it on the first ring, his professional mask sliding back into place instantly as he walked to his desk. “Speak to me,” he snapped. He listened for a fraction of a second, his posture turning rigid. “Which clause did the Europeans reject? Damn it, I told the board to hold the line. Route the legal team to the main boardroom immediately and freeze the wire transfers. I'll be at headquarters in ten minutes.” He ended the call and turned back to Lucy with a look of genuine, deep regret. “Please, Lucy, a multi-million dollar merger is on the line and it cannot wait. I have to head to the office right now.” He hurried past her toward the stairs, already barking orders to his security detail over his earpiece. As his silhouette disappeared down the grand staircase, a wave of pure, unadulterated relief washed over Lucy. She let out a breath she felt she’d been holding for days. At last, she thought, her pulse racing. At last, I can talk without anyone listening. She hurried out the rear glass doors and slipped through the morning mist until she reached the iron-framed conservatory. She unlocked the heavy doors, stepping into the dusty, overgrown sanctuary of hanging vines and withered flora. The profound isolation of the place perfectly mirrored her own mind. She sank to her knees directly onto the stone floor, her hands scrambling as she touched the rusted workbench her mother used to tend to. “Mom,” she whispered, and the word broke into an open sob. “Mom, I’m scared. I’m turning into a stranger to myself.” She rested her forehead against the cool iron framework, letting her tears fall freely. “I am completely consumed by a man who has no idea I exist in this way. To him, I am just 'Miss Davidson'—his boss' daughter, someone to be kept at a safe, professional distance. He doesn't know that I stay awake at night replaying his voice.” She clutched the edge of the workbench, a fierce, reckless thought suddenly taking root in her mind. The despair in her chest shifted into something sharp and calculated. “Father classifies him as nothing more than a poor sales representative from the streets. He sees Brian as someone completely beneath our world. But Mom... what if I changed his status? What if I used our wealth—the millions Father keeps locked away in trusts for my future—to secretly build him up? What if I covertly funded his ideas, engineered his rise, and made him a billionaire in the eyes of the world? Would Father finally accept him then?” She wiped her cheeks aggressively, her panic entirely replaced by a dangerous, unyielding determination. “I’m eighteen and I’m ready to engineer a man's entire destiny just so I can be allowed to love him. Brian told me practicality has to win. He’s already building walls against me, and he doesn't even know I'm about to tear them down.” The wind rattled the glass panes of the conservatory, the only answer to her question. Lucy sat there in the shadows, a lonely girl in a designer dress, quietly planning a financial revolution for a man who didn't even know her heart was beating for him.
