Seven sat at the edge of her bed reading a book she had just gotten from a library but she wasn't paying much attention. Her mind reeled from everything that had happened recently. She had married Nathaniel Brown. She had done it for her family, her father's restaurant, for revenge but she was starting to regret it. Every moment in the house was suffocating for her.
Nathaniel was distant, cold and he always avoided her except when they were forced to be together in public because now she was a part of the Brown family. One of the biggest conglomerates in Los Angeles. His expressions were always unreadable and he barely spoke to her when he had to. She thought he was an easy target but she was wrong all along,he wasn't.
She was about to go back to her book when Lucy came in.
“Mr Schneider is here to see you,” Lucy said.
“Jaime? Why is he here?” Ever since she married Nathan. She only saw Jaime maybe once or twice and she didn't understand why he was here to see her and Nathan was even on a business trip. She put on her slippers and headed downstairs.
“Hi” She said and extended her hand to shake him which he took. “But Nathaniel isn't around,” she said.
“I know. I'm here to see you” Jaime said, giving her a smile to kill for.
“Please sit” she said pointing to the seat beside them.
“I hope you don't mind that I'm here. I just wanted to keep your company. Thought you'd be bored” Jaime said.
“No I don't. In fact,I needed it” she replied. “You were close with my brother, weren't you?”
“Six was a good man. Too good for the filth he was surrounded with. I miss having him at work everyday”
“He was investigating Nathaniel before his death”
“I know”
“You do?”
“Yes. He told me bits and pieces, but he never got to share the full details before he passed”
“Why didn't you stop him? Nathan was your best friend” Seven asked suspiciously.
Jaime smiled. “Listen Seven,I know Nathan better than anyone else. He's not who he pretends to be but some things are better left unsaid”
“Do you think Nathan has anything to do with Six's death?”
“Like I said,he's not who he pretends to be and you have every rights to be suspicious”
Seven was frustrated, if Jaime knew something she needed him on her side especially when her brother told her Jaime was the only one she could trust. Jaime must have sensed her frustration, he placed his hand on top of her and she could feel his warmth.
“If you need anything Seven, just let me know. You don't have to go through this alone”
“Thank you,Jaime” She heaved a sigh of relief.
“Anytime” He replied,his smile widening.
Over the next few weeks, Jaime became her lifeline. When Nathaniel was away on business, Jaime was there. When she felt like she was drowning, Jaime pulled her back to the surface.
He never pushed. Never demanded. He simply listened, gave her comfort, and dropped just enough hints about Nathaniel’s corruption to keep her suspicions alive.
One evening, after another failed attempt at finding evidence on Nathaniel's corruption, she stormed into the living room where Jaime was waiting for her.
“There's nothing” She said with frustration.
“He covers his tracks well” Jaime said.
“If you know something, why won't you tell me?” Seven asked.
“It's not that simple darling” Jaime said and her heart fluttered with the little endearment. She quickly shakes it off.
“Why do you even still work for him, he's a monster. He killed my brother”
“I can't stop now, Seven,I just want Justice. For you. And for Six”
“You're also trying to take him down?”
“Trust me. I'm also working on something too”
She smiled. After Six's death and her marriage to Nathan,Jaime was the only constant presence in her life. Her mum was obsessed with money and her dad was barely living and Nathan was always on a business trip and when he was around she barely saw him.
“So when last did you and Nathan speak?” Jaime asked, switching the topic.
“We haven't since he left for the merger” she replied.
“Oh”
“I need to get more close with him if I want to find more evidence on this corruption but it's not working out the way I want. He's not even giving me the chance to. I don't even know why I try” Seven said. “He just doesn't change”
“Maybe you should just leave him be. Maybe he's not the one who needs to change. Maybe you are”
“What do you mean by that?” Seven asked not understanding what he was saying.
“You keep fighting for what isn't real. Maybe it's time to fight for what is”
“And what would that be?”
“Us”
Before she could sink in what he just said,he kissed her. It was slow and deliberate. And for the first time in a while she let herself go but as Jaime deepened the kiss, she pulled back. It didn't feel right.
“Hey,what's wrong?” Jaime asked softly, his voice almost a whisper.
“It just doesn't feel right. Whether I like him or not,I'm still married to him and this is wrong” Seven said.
“It's okay. I'm sorry” Jaime said, pushing the strand of hair on her face behind her hair. She smiled at him softly,he was a gentleman and was a hundred percent better than Nathan, and she liked him a lot but she just couldn't do anything for now.
“What's going on h
ere?” She heard Nathan's voice from the doorway.
