Rain fell steadily as dawn broke over the mountains.
Elara stood at the mouth of the cave, watching thick clouds drift between the towering peaks. The cool morning air carried the scent of wet earth and pine.
Behind her, Kael secured his pack.
"We should reach Valeth before nightfall," he said.
Elara turned to him.
"Do you really believe a city that's been abandoned for a thousand years holds the answers?"
Kael fastened the last strap.
"I don't believe."
He looked at her.
"I know."
---
The mountain trail narrowed as they climbed higher.
By midday the forest had disappeared completely.
Only jagged cliffs and ancient stone paths remained.
Massive statues lined the road.
Most had collapsed long ago, their faces worn away by centuries of wind and rain.
Elara paused beside one.
Its hands were folded across its chest.
Strangely, there was no face.
Only a smooth surface of stone.
"Why would someone carve statues without faces?" she asked.
Kael brushed dirt from an inscription near its base.
"They weren't carved that way."
"What do you mean?"
He pointed to faint marks around the neck.
"The faces were removed."
"By who?"
"I don't know."
A chill ran through Elara.
Someone had tried to erase the city's history.
But why?
---
Hours later, the mountains opened into a vast valley.
Elara stopped walking.
Her eyes widened.
Before them stood the ruins of Valeth.
It was far larger than she had imagined.
Broken towers stretched toward the sky.
Collapsed bridges connected enormous stone buildings.
Ancient walls surrounded the city, though much of them had crumbled away.
Even in ruins...
Valeth was magnificent.
"It's beautiful," Elara whispered.
Kael nodded.
"Once, it was the greatest city in the world."
They entered through a massive archway covered in faded symbols.
The streets were silent.
No birds.
No insects.
Only the sound of the wind moving through empty buildings.
It felt as though the city itself was holding its breath.
Elara noticed something strange.
"There are no skeletons."
Kael looked around.
She was right.
If an entire city had fallen...
Where were its people?
---
As the sun began to set, they reached the center of the city.
A gigantic circular building stood untouched by time.
Unlike everything else, it showed no signs of decay.
Its white stone walls gleamed beneath the fading light.
Above its entrance was a single symbol.
A circle surrounded by seven stars.
Kael stared at it.
"We're here."
"You've been here before?"
He shook his head.
"No."
"Then how do you know?"
"My father described it."
The enormous doors slowly creaked open.
Neither of them had touched them.
Elara exchanged a nervous glance with Kael.
"You saw that, right?"
"I did."
Inside, darkness swallowed the entrance hall.
Kael lit a small lantern.
Its warm glow revealed towering columns, marble floors, and hundreds of ancient bookshelves.
Most of the books had turned to dust.
But one object remained untouched.
At the center of the hall stood a crystal pedestal.
Resting upon it...
...was a single black book.
It looked brand new.
As if someone had placed it there only moments ago.
Elara approached cautiously.
"Wait," Kael warned.
She ignored him.
The moment her fingers touched the cover—
The entire building trembled.
The lantern went out.
A brilliant silver light filled the hall.
Ancient symbols ignited across the walls.
The floor beneath them began to glow.
Then a voice echoed through the chamber.
Not loud.
Not threatening.
Ancient.
Calm.
"At last..."
Elara's heart raced.
The voice continued.
"The Heir has returned."
The black book slowly opened by itself.
Its pages turned rapidly.
Wind roared through the hall despite the sealed doors.
Kael dropped to one knee in shock.
"It can't be..."
Words began appearing across the blank pages.
Not ink.
Light.
Glowing silver letters formed sentence after sentence.
Elara stared as the first line completed itself.
If you are reading these words... the Invisible Force has awakened once more.
Before she could read another line, a deafening crash echoed outside.
The ground shook violently.
Dust fell from the ceiling.
Kael rushed to the entrance.
His face lost all color.
"Elara..."
She joined him.
At the edge of the ruined city stood thousands of soldiers.
Their black banners stretched across the valley like a sea of darkness.
At their front rode King Aldric himself.
Beside him stood Commander Darius.
The king slowly raised his hand.
His voice thundered across the silent ruins.
"Bring me the girl."
The siege of Valeth had begun.
