Seeing this, I quickly drew my dagger. Years of experience had honed my reflexes. Faced with unknown threats, I remained calm, holding the dagger firmly as I peered outside. The red eyes were still rolling around, searching. After a tense moment, the creature suddenly disappeared, and I let out a sigh of relief.
Though I didn't know what it was, it didn't seem human. The strange part was that the watchmen hadn't noticed its approach. Where had they gone? Why hadn't they seen it coming?
Honestly, being alone in a tent at night was unnerving. I waited for a long time, but the rustling sound didn’t stop. Unable to endure it any longer, I grabbed my dagger, unzipped the tent, and peeked outside.
The red eyes were gone.
I slowly stepped out of the tent and made my way toward my second grandfather’s. But as I got closer, I realized his tent was empty. I looked around at the other tents, and they, too, were wide open with no one inside.
A wave of fear washed over me. Where could my second grandfather and the others have gone so late at night? Had something happened? My thoughts spiraled into worry, but I quickly shook it off. With my second grandfather's skills, there was no way he wouldn’t have woken me up if something was wrong.
Just then, a gust of cold wind swept past me. I turned to look, but before I could react, something slammed into me, knocking me to the ground. In a panic, I grabbed my dagger and thrust it forward. The attack was hard, as if hitting stone, and though the dagger didn’t pierce through, I felt a sharp pain.
With a shout, I rolled to the side, swiftly getting back on my feet. To my surprise, the creature attacking me resembled an ape, its eyes gleaming red.
It bared its teeth and let out a low growl, its red eyes flashing again. Was this the same creature I had seen earlier? Was this what it was?
The ape-like creature, though wary of my dagger, didn’t seem ready to give up. Sure enough, it charged at me with incredible speed. I barely had time to react before it leaped toward me.
I kicked it with all my strength, hoping to knock it aside, but to my shock, the creature was not only fast but incredibly resilient. It swayed but didn’t fall. With a roar, the ape swung a massive hand at my head.
Horrified, I tried to dodge, but at the same time, the ape swung its other hand, striking me with one powerful blow.
I stumbled and fell to the ground. The creature didn’t stop its assault. In a panic, I grabbed a nearby stone and hurled it at the ape’s face.
The ape blocked the rock with its hands, and in that moment, I scrambled to my feet, dragging myself away from the creature. No matter how fast I ran, it was right behind me.
Suddenly, a voice called out from the side.
"Young master, get out of the way!"
It was Uncle Hammer’s voice. I quickly rolled to the side, narrowly avoiding the ape.
Two loud shots rang out, and the relentless creature dropped to the ground with two small holes in its head.
"Young master, are you alright?" Uncle Hammer asked, rushing to help me up. I noticed he was holding a gun, though I couldn’t tell the model.
At that moment, I realized the importance of what had just happened. "What exactly happened?" I asked.
"It’s nothing," Uncle Hammer said. "The brothers on night watch noticed something was off, so they woke up. Before we could even warn you, these monstrous monkeys attacked us. If it weren't for Second Master drawing them away, we might all be finished."
My heart skipped a beat. "Where is my second grandfather now?"
Seeing my concern, Uncle Hammer chuckled. "Don’t worry. Second Master is waiting for you over there."
I sighed in relief. "That’s good."
Uncle Hammer patted my shoulder. "Your response just now was impressive. You really handled it well with the dagger. You know about these creatures."
I blushed, realizing how frightened I had been.
As I followed Uncle Hammer into the depths of the jungle, I saw my second grandfather standing with the men he had brought. Lu Yifa was holding a gun beside him.
I noticed that everyone except my second grandfather was armed. He only carried a dagger.
When we reached my second grandfather, I saw several men lying on the ground, their eyes wide open, with a red glow. It was the same as the ape's eyes.
"Xiaoyu, are you alright?" my second grandfather asked, concern in his eyes.
"I'm fine," I replied, giving him a reassuring nod.
"That's good," he said, his expression softening. "We haven't even entered yet, and these things have appeared at Duantou Ridge. It seems things are getting more unsettled here."
He sighed and turned away, leading the group back out of the jungle toward the camp.
Because my second grandfather had drawn the ape creatures away earlier, the campsite remained unharmed. After tidying up, everyone returned to their tents to rest. But I couldn’t shake the unease that lingered. My heart was still racing from what had just happened.
Determined not to let my guard down, I joined the others in keeping watch for the rest of the night.
Seeing my resolve, Uncle Hammer didn’t stop me. He simply told me to rest in my tent when I couldn’t stay awake any longer. I nodded, and he returned to his own tent.
