Sarah approached the lunch break with a sense of calm anticipation. The idea of spending time with Matthew was a welcome change from the usual routine, offering her an opportunity to connect with a friendly face in the office and escape the tense atmosphere around James. As noon approached, Sarah gathered her things and headed to the break room with a casual ease. She scanned the room, her eyes calmly searching for Matthew among the bustling crowd of coworkers. "Hey, Sarah! Glad you could make it," Matthew greeted her warmly, extending a hand. "Let me introduce you to some of the team." Sarah smiled gratefully, shaking Matthew's hand as he led her around the room, introducing her to her new coworkers. "This is Sarah, James' new secretary," Matthew announced to the group, gesturing to Sarah. "Sarah, meet Rachel and Tom from the accounting department." Rachel flashed a warm smile, extending her hand. "Nice to meet you, Sarah. Welcome aboard!" "Thanks, Rachel," Sarah replied, returning the handshake with a smile. Rachel exuded confidence with her sleek, tailored suit and polished appearance. Her dark hair was neatly styled, and she wore minimal makeup that accentuated her natural beauty. Sarah admired Rachel's sophisticated look, feeling a pang of self-consciousness about her own more casual attire. She then turned to Tom, who on the other hand, had a more laid-back demeanor, evident in his open-collar shirt and rolled-up sleeves. Despite his relaxed appearance, there was an air of competence about him that Sarah found reassuring. His easy smile and friendly demeanor put her at ease, and she couldn't help but feel drawn to his approachable nature. Tom greeted her with a friendly nod. "Hey there, Sarah," Tom said, his tone cheerful. "Good to have you around." "Thanks, Tom," Sarah responded warmly. Matthew couldn't resist adding a light-hearted comment. "Watch out for these two, Sarah. They're the money masters around here. I’m certain they count pennies in their sleep!" Rachel chuckled at Matthew's jest, while Tom rolled his eyes playfully. "Oh, please. We're not that scary," Rachel teased. "Yeah, we're not like those stereotypical number-crunchers in the movies," Tom added with a grin. Sarah laughed along with them, appreciating the friendly atmosphere. "Well, I'm sure I'll learn a lot from you both." As the conversation continued, Sarah found herself drawn into their easy banter. They chatted about recent projects, shared funny office anecdotes, and even exchanged tips for dealing with difficult clients. Eventually, Matthew suggested grabbing lunch together, but Rachel and Tom politely declined, citing a pressing task they needed to complete. "Maybe next time," Rachel said with a reassuring smile. "Definitely," Sarah agreed, feeling a sense of camaraderie with her new coworkers. Matthew gestured towards the door, indicating to Sarah that they should step out. Sarah followed him, feeling her sense of curiosity piqued. "How about we grab a coffee across the street?" he suggested, nodding towards a quaint café nestled in a corner. Sarah considered his offer for a moment before nodding in agreement. "That sounds lovely," she replied, a hint of excitement tugging at the corners of her lips. Together, they made their way across the street, the lively energy of the city enveloping them as they walked. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee beckoned them closer, drawing them towards the cozy café with its inviting ambiance. As they entered the café Sarah felt the warm and welcoming atmosphere wash over her, filling her with a sense of comfort and ease. Matthew led the way to a cozy corner booth, where they settled in comfortably. "What can I get for you?" he asked, his voice laced with genuine interest. Sarah glanced at the menu, considering her options for a moment before making her decision. "I'll have a cappuccino and a burger, please," she replied, returning Matthew's smile with one of her own. Matthew placed their order with the barista, exchanging friendly banter as they waited for their drinks to be prepared. Sarah admired the easy rapport between Matthew and the barista, a testament to his affable nature. She wished she could be like that sometimes but there are days she really does not feel like smiling. Soon enough, Matthew returned to the table with a tray laden with steaming cups of coffee and two delicious-looking burgers. He slid into the booth opposite Sarah, a playful twinkle in his eyes as he handed her a cup of coffee. "Here you go, Sarah. I hope you like it," he said with a grin, before taking a sip of his own coffee. "Thank you, Matthew. It looks delicious," Sarah replied, a smile tugging at the corners of her lips as she took a sip of her coffee. The rich, aromatic brew warmed her from the inside out, filling her with a sense of comfort and contentment. As they began to enjoy their meal, Matthew turned his attention to Sarah, his gaze curious as he asked about her background and upbringing. "So, Sarah, tell me a little bit about yourself. Where are you from?" Matthew inquired, his tone gentle and encouraging. Sarah took a moment to collect her thoughts before responding, her gaze thoughtful as she spoke. "Well, I'm originally from a small town in the countryside. It's a quiet, close-knit community where everyone knows everyone else," she began, her voice tinged with nostalgia. "I come from a humble background, raised by loving parents who worked hard to provide for my siblings and me. I have two younger siblings, twins actually," she continued, a fond smile playing on her lips as she thought of her siblings. "We grew up in a simple but happy home, filled with love and laughter." Matthew listened intently, nodding along as Sarah spoke. He couldn't help but admire her resilience and determination, impressed by her strength in the face of adversity. "That sounds like a wonderful upbringing, Sarah," Matthew remarked, his voice sincere. "It's clear that you come from a strong and loving family. I can see why you've turned out to be such an incredible person." Sarah felt a warm flush of gratitude spread through her at Matthew's words, touched by his genuine kindness. "How did you end up here in the city? And where did you study?" Sarah took a thoughtful sip of her coffee before responding, her gaze distant as she recounted her journey to the bustling metropolis. "After graduating from high school, I knew I wanted to explore opportunities beyond the confines of my small town. I applied to several universities and eventually landed a scholarship to study business administration at the University of the Leadcity," she explained, her voice tinged with pride. "It was a challenging but rewarding experience, and I learned a lot during my time there. After graduating, I decided to pursue a career in marketing, drawn to the dynamic and the nature of the field," she continued, her eyes alight with passion. Matthew nodded, impressed by Sarah's determination and drive. "It sounds like you've had quite the journey, Sarah. I admire your courage to pursue your dreams and carve out your own path," he remarked, his admiration evident in his voice. Sarah smiled gratefully, touched by Matthew's words. "Thank you, Matthew. It hasn't always been easy, but I believe that everything happens for a reason. I'm grateful for the opportunities that have come my way and excited to see where this new chapter will take me," she said, her voice filled with optimism. “So, What about you, Matthew? What's your story?" Sarah asked. Matthew smiled. "Well, I come from a well-to-do family in the neighboring state of Verden. My parents are both successful entrepreneurs, and they instilled in me a strong work ethic from a young age," he explained, his voice tinged with pride. "After completing my studies in business management at Verden University, I decided to venture out on my own and explore different career opportunities. That's how I ended up here in the vibrant city of Creston," he continued, his gaze sweeping across the bustling streets outside the coffee shop. Sarah nodded, impressed by Matthew's background and accomplishments. "It sounds like you've had quite the journey yourself, Matthew. What made you choose marketing?" Matthew chuckled, a playful glint in his eyes. "Honestly, I've always had a knack for persuasion and communication. Marketing seemed like the perfect fit for me – a blend of creativity, strategy, and people skills," he replied, his enthusiasm evident. "As for why I chose Creston, well, there's something about this city that's always drawn me in. The energy, the diversity, the endless opportunities – it's unlike anywhere else," he added, a smile playing on his lips. Sarah nodded in agreement, a smile tugging at the corners of her lips. "I can see why Creston is such a special place for you," she replied, her voice filled with genuine appreciation. As the clock struck the end of their lunch break, Sarah and Matthew reluctantly rose from their seats, preparing to head back to the office. "Thank you for the wonderful conversation, Matthew. I really enjoyed getting to know you," Sarah said warmly, her eyes meeting his. Matthew returned her smile, his gaze warm and sincere. "Likewise, Sarah. I had a great time too," he replied, his voice tinged with regret as they made their way out of the coffee shop. Mathew walked Sarah back to her desk in silence. "Thanks for walking me." Sarah said gratefully. "Its no problem, by the way, I noticed the absence of your car in the parking lot. Where is it?" Sarah hesitated for a moment, her cheeks flushing slightly. "Oh, um, it's actually in the shop for some repairs. I had to take the bus today," she admitted. Before Matthew could offer to give her a ride home, their conversation was abruptly interrupted by the sound of James's voice. "I'll be driving you home today," James announced, his tone brooking no argument as he approached them, his expression unreadable. Sarah felt a surge of surprise at James's unexpected offer with her mouth opened trying to find the right words, her mind whirling with questions like how long had he been there waiting? How much did he hear? Before she could protest, James gestured for her to follow him, his brisk stride leaving no room for argument. Sarah cast a fleeting glance at Mathew, then at James and back at Mathew as he encouraged her to go on with a nod of his head.
