Chapter 4: Luna

1068 Words
The prophecy passed down through generations of the pack’s elders, The Marked One, an outsider who will form an unbreakable bond with the alpha and have the ability to change the pack's fate, is described as a pivotal figure who will appear during the pack's darkest hour. The elders believe this figure will be both a blessing and a curse, saving the pack only after enduring hardships of bloodshed, treachery, and sacrifice. The prophecy warns that the pack's survival would rest on a single, seemingly impossible choice made by this outsider, a choice that would test their loyalty, strength, and heart. They could only unlock the ancient power needed to overcome the pack’s greatest threat by aligning with the alpha's spirit. But the prophecy also suggests a terrible price: if the bond is broken, the outsider's involvement might permanently shatter the pack. Despite her doubt, Evelyn has unintentionally fulfilled numerous prophecies, including the timing of her arrival, her rejection of the pack's rules and regulations, and her spiritual bond with Alaric. The prophecy's mysterious warning feels all too real now that the threat posed by the rival alpha is imminent. Evelyn stood at the edge of the sacred circle, trembling under the silver light of the full moon. The elders encouraged her to call forth the Luna Goddess, an old spirit whose strength may save the pack, even though her wolf form was weak and undeveloped. Evelyn was aware of the cost: to change, she would have to go through a bone-breaking procedure that was much more painful than the normal shift. Her determination overcame her dread as she tightened her fists. As the full moon reached its peak, Evelyn knelt, her body filled with pain as her transformation began. Every snap of bone and tear of muscle felt like fire flowing through her, but she refused to stop. With one final, terrifying howl, her voice echoed into the night, a call to the Luna Goddess herself. The wind stilled, the air thickened, and a radiant figure emerged—A shiny wolf with a celestial appearance and sparkling eyes. The spirit of the Luna Goddess joined the battle, giving the pack a boost of courage and solidarity. Alaric led the attack, defeating the opposing Alpha's army with his wolves. The enemies scattered with some suffering injuries, others escaping, and yet others dying at the hands of the Goddess's wrath. With the release of the captured scout and the withdrawal of the opposing wolves, the pack's victory was written into their history and echoed through the night. Evelyn's mind continued to focus on the infant she had found even after the chaotic battle ended and the opposing wolves had been defeated. After the fight, unable to ignore the questions that were still bothering her, she went in search of Alaric. She discovered him in the great hall, his face weighed down by exhaustion and stress. Evelyn gathered her confidence and sought information about the infant who was hidden in the nursery. After a moment of tense silence, he admitted the truth: the child was his. However, his explanation left her with more questions than answers. The mother, he revealed, had vanished mysteriously after an act of betrayal that had shaken the pack’s foundation. He refused to reveal more, his tone clipped and final. Frustration aroused within Evelyn—she had come to expect Alaric’s guarded nature, but this was different. The vulnerability in his voice the pain hidden behind his reserved demeanour made her pause. As she processed the revelation, she couldn’t ignore the whispers around the pack. Her presence had already unsettled some, and her growing bond with Alaric only deepened their distrust. Rumours began to circulate, accusing her of being a danger to the pack’s unity. Evelyn found herself caught between proving her loyalty and unravelling the web of secrets surrounding Alaric and the child. The weight of the pack’s expectations pressed down on her, leaving her determined to uncover the truth. Evelyn's presence in the pack still raised discontent, and her developing relationship with Alaric attracted increased attention. Selene, whose jealousy burned radiantly, led the opposition. Selene used harsh language to accuse Evelyn of endangering the pack's stability by manipulating Alaric. The tensions reached a breaking point when the elders stepped in and ordered Evelyn to demonstrate her commitment with an endurance test under the full moon. The trial was as brutal as it was symbolic. Evelyn was sent into the cursed forest, a dangerous area where twisted trees and spooky silence concealed unknown dangers. To survive, she would need to avoid the pack's warriors, who pursued her tirelessly, testing her bravery and instincts. Whispers of doubt gnawed at her determination, and the woods appeared to come to life, with shadows moving. With every step, she had to fight dread and the rough edges of her insecurities. When she finally emerged at dawn, bloodied and battered, her survival became a testament to her strength. Some pack members grudgingly acknowledged her bravery, Respect curbs their distrust. But Selene's hatred simply grew stronger, her boiling fury revealing more conflict. A hard-earned win in a battle far from over, Evelyn's triumph was bittersweet. While recovering from her intense trial, Evelyn’s curiosity led her to wander along the stronghold's less-travelled passages. The discovery of a hidden council chamber sent a chill through her. The room's walls were covered in forgotten treasures, and it weighed heavily with secrets. At the centre of it lay an ancient book, its pages yellowed with age but still readable. As Evelyn glanced through, the unsettling truth unravelled, full details of betrayals inside the pack, names inscribed as traitors. Her heart froze when she saw Selene’s name tied to rebel dealings. The revelation was too important to ignore, but Evelyn understood that simply presenting the ledger would not be enough. Selene was deeply rooted in the pack's hierarchy, her influence making her untouchable without undeniable proof and significant backing. Evelyn set out to gather support, using the respect she had earned from her trial to persuade key pack members. When the moment came to confront Selene, Evelyn laid out the evidence before the elders. Selene, on the other hand, demonstrated her dubious ways by creating her own story. She accused Evelyn of sowing division and distrust. Her charisma convinced some pack members, reigniting past suspicions about Evelyn's motivations and once again putting her on shaky ground.
