Chapter 2: The Alpha's claim.

1278 Words
Evelyn became engulfed in the intense dynamics of the pack. With an air of commanding authority, the alpha began outlining the laws that governed their existence. Every rule and every tradition seemed designed to strengthen the hierarchy, with the alpha at the highest point. The pack members moved with precision, their respect for the alpha unmistakable, yet Evelyn could detect a hint of uneasiness in the atmosphere. Selene, the beta and second-in-command, stood close to the alpha, her sharp gaze fixed on Evelyn. Something was unsettling about her presence—her posture rigid, her eyes narrowing with what could only be described as calculated suspicion. Unlike the others who followed the alpha’s commands without question, Selene's lips pressed into a narrow line with each alpha's address to Evelyn, radiating an unsaid threat. It didn’t take long for Evelyn to realize that her sudden inclusion in the pack was not welcomed by everyone. The whispers of discontent weren’t loud, but they were present—a murmur in the corners of the room, a passing glance that lingered a little too long. She couldn't get rid of the impression that her presence was upsetting the delicate balance of the pack, even while the alpha talked of protection and unity. Determined to reclaim her freedom, Evelyn waits for the night to fall, her heart pounding as she slips unnoticed into the dense forest. The towering trees form a canopy overhead. Every step she takes away from the pack’s territory feels like a victory, though her nerves remain on edge. She knows the alpha would be furious if he discovered her absence, but the weight of the pack’s rules and the simmering tension with Selene leave her no choice. The air grows colder as she approaches the boundary, a subtle shift in energy signaling that she has crossed into unclaimed territory. Relief washes over her, but it’s short-lived. A low growl echoes through the darkness, followed by another. Evelyn freezes, her breath hitching as several glowing eyes pierce the darkness. A pack of rogue wolves emerges, their snarls breaking the silence. As they close in, they circle her like prey, their actions predatory. Panic gnaws at Evelyn's throat as her thoughts race. She feels bad for not realizing the risks the alpha had forewarned her about. She discovers too late that leaving the pack may have been her worst error, leaving her defenseless and alone. A thunderous snarl rips through the darkness before the rogues can close in for the kill. With the faint moonlight shining on his huge physique, the alpha leaps into the battle in his wolf form. His motions are a mix of strength and accuracy, and his eyes are blazing with rage. It was a brief period of doubt on the part of the rogues. A vicious clash breaks out as they lunge at him. With growls, snapping teeth, and yelps of pain filling the air, the confrontation is violent and savage. Evelyn watches, paralyzed, as the alpha dominates the rogues, his ferocity unmatched. For the first time, she understands the depths of his power, and it terrifies her. Within minutes, the rogues are either dead or scattered, their howls of defeat fading into the night. The alpha, bloodied but unbroken, turns his blazing eyes to Evelyn. Without a word, he shifts back into his human form. He takes hold of her arm and pulls her back angrily toward the pack's stronghold. The tension in the pack's chamber of worship is overpowering. An old totem, burning faintly with an unearthly light, stands at its center. The totem's energy buzzes to life as Evelyn gets closer, giving her an odd feeling of warmth. With their gazes focused on the totem, the pack goes silent. Evelyn and the alpha appear to be connected by an unseen thread of spiritual energy. The elders whisper to one another in awe-tinged tones. "It's the bond," one of them murmurs, sending echoes through the crowd. Destined. Destiny is written. Evelyn looks with disbelief at the totem, her thoughts racing. She doesn't want this connection, she doesn't want to be bound to a man who represents everything she has attempted to avoid. However, the totem's glow and the pack's whispers alert her to the possibility that fate has other ideas. Evelyn takes a step back, and the glow from the totem pulses faintly between her and the alpha. She refuses to believe what the bond implies, her voice ringing out in the hall as she challenges him in front of the entire pack. “You’re just using this so-called ‘fate’ to justify controlling my life!” Her words hang in the air, heavy with accusation. Anger and a brief flash of hurt are mixed into the alpha's expression. He does not, however, deny her assertion. Rather, his silence is more powerful than words. With unshakable devotion to the alpha, the pack moves uneasily, with some members glaring at Evelyn and others at each other. Evelyn refuses to be intimidated by the weight of their glances, despite the oppressive atmosphere in the hallway. Later that night, as the moon casts an eerie glow over the pack’s space, Selene corners Evelyn near the edge of the stronghold. Her piercing gaze burns with jealousy. “You don’t belong here,” Selene hisses, her voice low and venomous. “You’re nothing but an outsider, clinging to something you don’t understand.” Evelyn clenches her fists, her anger flaring. “I never asked to be here. If it were up to me, I’d be long gone!” Selene steps closer, her presence suffocating. “Then maybe you should go before things get worse. Not everyone in the pack wants you here, and that includes me. You’re a disruption—a weakness we can’t afford.” The words sting, but Evelyn refuses to let Selene see her fumble. “I’m not afraid of you,” she snaps, her voice steady despite the fire in her chest. Selene smiles, her self-assurance is unshakable. "Maybe you should." The air changes with an unnatural tension as Evelyn and Selene's heated conversation reaches its peak. A rogue wolf leaps out of the shadows, its fangs flashing in the moonlight before either can react. Selene just escapes the rogue's deadly bite as her instincts take over, and she pushes Evelyn away. Despite their enmity, the two ladies must fight alongside one another because they are forced to do so by circumstances. The rogue’s speed and savagery push them to their limits. Evelyn, untrained and unarmed, struggles to keep up while Selene expertly fends off the attacker, though even her strength begins to waver. Just as the rogue gains the upper hand, snapping dangerously close to Evelyn, a thunderous snarl splits the night. The alpha emerges, his massive wolf form colliding with the rogue in a flurry of fur and claws. The battle is brutal, every blow shaking the forest as the rogue fights viciously. Evelyn and Selene watch helplessly as the alpha delivers the final strike. Bloodied but victorious, his wolf eyes blazed with fury. As Evelyn struggles to catch her breath, a deep growl echoes from the forest’s edge, sending chills down her spine. The alpha steps forward, shifting back to his human form, his presence was commanding. Blood drips from his wounds, but his voice remains steady, his gaze locking on Evelyn. “This bond isn’t just fate—it’s survival,” he says, his voice low and filled with authority. “And you’re going to have to choose.” The weight of his words lingers, the forest falling into a tense, expectant silence Evelyn faces the choice that will determine her future.
