​Within seconds, I heard the heavy sound of footsteps running fast down the hallway. The sound of Ema hitting the floorboards must have made a lot of noise downstairs. ​The bedroom door flew open. It was Max. He rushed straight past me, knelt down beside Ema on the floor, and carefully held her up in his arms. ​"Are you okay, Miss Ema?" he asked her, his voice full of worry. ​Ema nodded her head slowly, squeezing out a few fake tears, and lifted her right arm to show him her wrist.
