57 Lincoln It takes me a while drift off. The conversation with Myla has me concerned, to say the least. Still, there are so many other things to worry about. The Contagion tops the list, but nearby there’s Nat and Baptiste, the other Marked Ones, and whatever it is that Aldred’s really up to. When I do fall asleep, I dream of white fire. The flames quickly vanish, leaving me in the same fantasy forest from my previous dreams. I approach the line of blue smoke that curls above the treetops. When I reach the clearing, my Guide is nowhere to be seen. A different figure stands facing the fire. It’s a woman. Although her back is facing me, I can tell how her gown hails from the House of Rixa. Betrothal jewels—earrings, tiara, and a diamond ring—all glimmer in the firelight. I step closer.
