Adrian didn't sleep.
The message remained on his phone long after midnight.
You don't know the truth about why she disappeared.
He had read it so many times that the words had begun to lose meaning.
Whoever had sent it knew about Amara.
More importantly, they knew about the night they were separated.
Adrian had spent twenty years searching for answers.
Now someone was offering them.
But why?
His phone buzzed again.
Meet me tomorrow. Alone.
Then an address appeared.
Adrian stared at it.
He knew better than to trust an anonymous stranger.
But if there was even a small chance that the person knew what had happened to Amara...
He had to go.
---
The next morning, Amara woke with a strange feeling.
For the first time since she had remembered Adrian, she felt happy.
Real happiness.
She stood in front of the mirror, touching the locket around her neck.
She remembered the boy beneath the mango tree.
She remembered the bracelet he had made for her.
She remembered his promise.
And now she remembered something else.
The way she had felt whenever he was near.
She had loved him then.
And perhaps she still did.
A knock came at her door.
Her mother entered.
"You're awake early."
Amara smiled.
"I remembered him."
Her mother's expression changed.
"Who?"
"Adrian."
The room became silent.
Her mother slowly sat on the edge of the bed.
"You shouldn't be seeing him."
Amara frowned.
"Why?"
"Because some things from the past should remain in the past."
"But he spent years looking for me."
"I know."
"How?"
Her mother looked away.
Amara immediately noticed.
"You knew?"
Her mother said nothing.
"Mom."
"I was trying to protect you."
"From what?"
Her mother sighed.
"From people who don't want you to remember."
Amara's heart began beating faster.
"Who?"
Before her mother could answer, her phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
Unknown number.
She answered.
"Hello?"
A woman's voice came through.
"Celine."
Amara frowned.
"Who?"
"My name is Celine. I think we should talk."
---
Celine sat in her car outside a café.
She had spent the entire morning planning the conversation.
She didn't intend to threaten Amara.
Not yet.
That would be too obvious.
Instead, she would make Amara question Adrian.
That was far more effective.
When Amara arrived, Celine stood.
"Thank you for coming."
Amara sat across from her.
"Why did you ask to see me?"
Celine smiled.
"I've known Adrian for a very long time."
Amara's expression changed.
"I know."
"He probably told you about me."
"No."
Celine pretended to be surprised.
"He didn't?"
Amara shook her head.
Celine lowered her gaze.
"Then perhaps he hasn't told you everything."
There it was.
The first c***k.
"What haven't I been told?"
Celine hesitated.
"Adrian and I were together."
Amara went still.
"Together?"
"Before you came back."
Amara stared at her.
Celine quickly added,
"At least, that's what I thought we were."
Her voice sounded wounded.
"I was there for him for years, Amara. Through everything."
Amara swallowed.
"Did Adrian love you?"
Celine looked away.
"I believed he did."
It was the perfect answer.
Not a complete lie.
Not the truth either.
Just enough to create doubt.
"He never told me about you," Celine continued. "Not until recently."
Amara's fingers tightened around her cup.
"Why are you telling me this?"
"Because you deserve to know what you're walking into."
Celine leaned closer.
"Adrian has spent years searching for the girl he lost."
She smiled sadly.
"But people change, Amara."
Amara looked at her.
"So what are you saying?"
"I'm saying that the man you remember may not be the man standing in front of you now."
Celine stood.
"I hope I'm wrong."
She left.
Amara remained seated.
Her mind was racing.
She wanted to dismiss everything Celine had said.
But one question wouldn't leave her mind.
Why had Adrian never mentioned her?
---
Meanwhile, Adrian arrived at the address from the mysterious message.
It was an abandoned-looking building on the edge of the city.
He stepped inside.
"Hello?"
A man's voice answered from the darkness.
"You came."
Adrian stopped.
"Who are you?"
The man stepped forward.
He was older, with tired eyes.
"I knew your father."
Adrian's expression hardened.
"What does my father have to do with Amara?"
The man looked at him.
"Everything."
Adrian's jaw tightened.
"Tell me."
"Twenty years ago, your father discovered that your family wasn't the only one planning to leave the village."
Adrian frowned.
"What does that mean?"
"Amara's family was being forced to leave."
"By who?"
The man hesitated.
"Your father."
Adrian froze.
"No."
"He believed Amara's family knew something they shouldn't."
"What?"
"I don't know."
"You're lying."
The man shook his head.
"I only know that your father paid someone to make sure the two families never met again."
Adrian's face went pale.
"Why?"
"I told you. I don't know."
The man reached into his coat and pulled out an old photograph.
He handed it to Adrian.
It showed Adrian's father standing beside Amara's father.
On the back was a date.
The same date they had disappeared.
Adrian stared at it.
His hands trembled.
"What happened to Amara's family?"
The man looked away.
"They were threatened."
"By my father?"
"Yes."
Adrian stepped backward.
All his life, he had believed their separation was an unfortunate tragedy.
Now he was beginning to wonder whether it had been planned.
Before he could ask another question, the lights suddenly went out.
Adrian turned.
"Who's there?"
No answer.
Then he heard footsteps.
The door slammed.
He rushed toward it.
Locked.
Someone had trapped him inside.
---
Across town, Amara sat alone in her room.
Celine's words continued to echo in her head.
She reached for her phone.
She wanted to call Adrian.
But before she could, a message appeared.
Ask Adrian where he was last night.
Amara frowned.
Another message followed.
Then ask him why he lied about it.
She stared at the screen.
Her heart sank.
She called Adrian.
No answer.
She tried again.
Still nothing.
Amara stood.
Something was wrong.
She grabbed her bag and headed for the door.
But before she could leave, her mother stopped her.
"Where are you going?"
"To find Adrian."
Her mother's face went pale.
"Amara, don't."
"Why?"
Her mother looked terrified.
"Because if you go looking for him now..."
She paused.
"You may uncover something neither of us can undo."
Amara stared at her.
"What are you hiding?"
Her mother didn't answer.
And somewhere across the city, Adrian was trapped inside a dark room, unaware that someone had just started a chain of events that would bring the secrets of twenty years crashing back into their lives.
And Celine?
She sat quietly in her apartment.
Watching Adrian's unanswered calls appear on her phone.
She smiled.
The first lie had been told.
Now she only needed Amara to believe it.
