Was it a Promise or a Threat?
Ed Clanton had been trying to sell his ranch for longer than he expected, but the wait enlarged the herd and allowed for a better price. He had promised his soon-to-be ex-wife and his daughter that when he sold he would split the money evenly between the three of them and they could all go their separate ways.
His daughter’s name was Lacey and she was his only child.
So, when he did sell, he gave the buyer a little break in trade for giving him twenty percent of the price in cash. That kept Janice from complaining when he gave Lacey a good bit more than he kept or gave to Janice.
Lacey rode into town with her parents with a somewhat smaller saddle horse in tow. She bought herself a brand new buggy. She had it sent in from the big city of Bozeman
