Domingo and Axle walked back to the office in silence. Once there, Domingo pulled his chair over near the wall and sat down. He leaned back against the wall and propped his feet up on the desk.
Axle picked up a newspaper he had sent in from the valley. He sat in his favorite chair in front of the cell. The sun came in through the cell window and made reading easy.
Domingo had his hat pulled down. He was sorting things out. The only sound in the room was a blowfly that maintained an orbit around the ceiling light as if it was on. Domingo’s voice broke the otherwise silence. Without opening his eyes he said, “So Axle, what’s your take on where Baker is?”
“Well,” said Axle, without lowering his paper, “way I see it, he’s either in that mountain and won’t likely ever
