The Last Tree

Chapter six

It’s been days since He’s seen Adam and they still have many more to go. This beautiful horse is weary having to carry both of them and with the little food that he grew or they found at the inns along the way. Not much is here and most of the towns are where the trees use to be, they’re destroyed much like tree haven city. But humans live on clinging to life in so many unexpected ways in the shadows of the dead giants. Every splinter brother squid comes across screams of dead magic that once brought life. And what little it has left is seeping out slowly to bring new life. Only there is so little left, barely clinging on to help the people here. He spreads his hands on the trunk of the huge stump and boosts the magic still left. The air changes in an instant and it seems like brother squid could breath easier. The bark hums in contentment of the extra help it received for its people.

He see many plants spring to life when they were wilting, and the animals have new life in their eyes. He takes off his shoes and digs his toes in the earth to feel as the world around him comes to life. He is smiling but then he realizes that this is only temporary. He cannot stay here to keep the magic flowing. He cannot stay in any human city, he is a squid, he must go back to his salt water lake and to sister tree.

The sad truth is that other than where sister tree is, this world will go on, yes, but nothing will be alive. The magic that brings life will be wiped out. They have been barely hanging on with the dead magic still left. But that is running out. And the world is barren where it doesn’t have it.

Brother squid has been too naive to the troubles of the people. Many innocent lives have been troubled or lost since that hated man has taken the stones and brother squid can no longer ignore their cries. The stones call for retribution, for justice, for a peace on this world. Soon the world will be as it should. Brother squid knows that Adam getting taken was a blessing in disguise, no, he didn’t want Adam to be taken. Don’t get him wrong, but it made brother squid open his eyes to the trouble the innocents are having because of the emperor. He and all he stands for are in the way of peace, and for that he has to go.

Brother squid looks back at the girl, Emily, and nods. “Come, we must prepare to move on. Adam is waiting and we still have a ways to go.” They both climb onto the weary horse. Brother squid realizes that Emily has spent half her life time without the influence of life giving magic of the trees in her life. He looks out at the world around him and sees many things that were effected by it but all without the true power of the sister trees. This world is lacking, and he hardens his resolve to fix that. He is coming for the man who started it all, the emperor.
