Azrael’s POV After I dashed inside to compose myself, I tried to think of anything that would take my mind off of her. Deers, rogues, bees, beef jerky. I rambled trying to quickly settle my hormones. There was no way a single she-wolf would have my mind unsettled in such a way. The curious yet puzzled expression she wore while staring at me. Her beautiful light brown eyes that raked me up and down with a look of approval. Sh*t. I cursed myself as I lost all the progress I had just made. Just then I heard father state that they were about to begin. I repositioned myself and headed back towards the ceremony.
“Welcome Alphas and spawns. Today is the day that I pass on the title of Alpha to my son Azrael.”I placed much needed cold expression on my face and went to join him on stage.
I watched as he called the omegas to bring the ceremonial dagger and a bowl. I was taught the purpose of the dagger as well was the words needed during the transfer of the title. Neither of it made sense to me but I also didn't care to argue about it. The two omegas that brought the dagger were skinny and weak looking.
A pack should be powerful and strong. If your wolves were weak then you were left open to a possible attack. I glanced over at my mate a few times, only to catch her staring at me with worry in her expression. I brushed it off as my mind started to drift to this morning and I remembered the thought of being attacked during the transfer.
"Rage?"
“What Pup?" He answered nonchalantly.
" The reason you were restless this morning, was it because it because you knew who the scent belonged to?"I had some suspicion that he was hiding something but I wasn't completely sure.
“If I tell you, will you shut up?"I rolled my eyes internally at his attitude.
“I really don't have time for your sh*t today rage."
" As much as I would rather see you make a fool out of yourself, its best that I tell you. Yes that was the reason."
"You pathetic wolf, if you knew, why didn't you say something?!"I started to become angry but was stopped mid way.
He wasn't given a chance to answer because father stood before me with the dagger in his left had. He was ready to begin so I turned toward him.
“I ,Alpha Anthony of The Black Moon Pack, hereby pass on to thee, the title of Alpha to lead this pack under your rule.” He then sliced his right hand open and held it over the bowl. I took the dagger and stood in position as it was now my turn to speak.
“ I, Azrael of the Black Moon Pack, hereby accept the title of Alpha and accept the duties to lead this pack under my rule.” I sliced my right palm open and grasped father's hand in the form of a hand shake and closed my eyes as I began to feel the shift in authority. My wolf was already slightly larger than father's but I still felt as if he had grown a bit more.
As the power transfer was coming to an end, we opened our eyes and released the grasp. A smell drifted into my nostrils and made them flare while Rage began growling and tried to gain control. It was her arousal that made go crazy. I wanted to run to her and drag her out of sight but I restrained myself. If she was here that meant she was the child of an alpha and we couldn't afford an attack right now. Someone then came and took the dagger and bowl away while giving us a cloth to clean our hands.
As I stepped off stage, father stayed and started to speak again. I thought that was the end of the ceremony. Mother was standing near the stage while looking at me with pride in her. Of course she would be be proud, I am an alpha now. She also had a look of fear in her eyes which also confused me but she then began to mindlink me.
“Azrael? I know I may not have been the type of mother you wanted and I tried my best but your father wanted me to have no part in raising you. I was abused from the moment he found me and I’m sure you know what happened to your sisters. Azrael I’m sorry for everything I couldn’t do, I know you’ll be a great Alpha and I’ll do my best to watch over you from wherever I may go.” Father’s voice echoed in the back ground but I barely registered what he was saying.
“Mom, what are you talking about, where are you going?” I asked her confusingly. I had no idea what was going on.
“Your father told me this morning that he no longer needs me and that he will be getting rid of me soon. I think he is going to k*ll me Azrael.” I stiffened as she said those words. I had never been close with her but the thought of father k*lling her because he no longer wanted her? My mind was riddled with thoughts.
“ Are you sure that’s what he’s going to do?” I asked hoping it was not the case.
“ I’m positive. But it’s alright, I know I’ll be free from this suffering and regret I’ve always had to bare. Whenever you do find your mate Azrael, promise me you won’t treat her the way your father treated me, regardless of her rank or title.” I left the stage area abruptly, unable to witness the scene but my last words to her I would never forget.
“ I promise Mom.” With those last few words, I was on my way to the forest as I heard the scream of someone in the crowd and I felt mother’s connection fade. Anger surged through me for reasons I could not comprehend. My wolf had the urge to cry out in a howl for the loss of a pack member. I began punching trees until they splintered and breaking anything that my hands came upon. I was blinded by rage and wanted nothing more than for everyone to leave immediately. I heard the rest of the pack cry out weakly at the lost of their unofficial Luna. Their cries did nothing but fuel my rage in both me and my wolf. Just as I was about to shift I smelt it, warm honey and vanilla. I turned and saw my mate standing there nervously. Her eyes looked as if she had seen the most horrific thing in her lifetime. Her voice was soft and angelic to my ears as she spoke.
“ Hey Azrael. Can I call you Azrael?” My name never sounded better coming out of her mouth. Her being in my presence was enough to start calming me down.
“You can call me Azrael, what’s your name?” I asked as I walked closer to her.
“It’s Jaylyn.” She answered as her breath hitched from our proximity.
“ Jaylyn.” I tested the name in my tongue. “ I like it.” I loved the sound of her name.
“ I’m sorry about your mom, I saw the way you left so I thought I would try and comfort you.” My jaw clenched at the thought it and I let out an audible sigh. I don’t know how to be affectionate because I’ve never shown emotions toward anyone. I stretched my arms out a brought her into a hug. She stiffened slightly but began to relaxed. Even though I was wearing a long sleeved shirt, I could still feel the sparks erupting between us.
I remembered what I had promised my mother a few minutes ago as I embraced my mate. I couldn’t let father know I had found her. I had made my decision on what I was going to do and I needed to act quickly.
“Jaylyn listen to me.” I began to speak. “ I need you to go back to your pack for a while, there are some things that I need to take care of here first but my father cannot know about you.
“Why is that?” Her eyebrows furrowed as she questioned my reason.
“ I can’t tell you right now because we’re running out of time. Once I’m done, I’ll come come and get you.” I held her chin and looked deeply into her eyes. This was going to be hard but I know it’s something that has to be done.
Just as I was about to send her off with another hug. Two males emerged from the trees shouting her name. The older one spotted us and spoke first.
“Jaylyn get away from him now.” He began growling which pissed Rage off.
With a fierce growl, I grabbed my mate and stood in front of her protectively and a single word left my mouth.
“MINE!”
