Chapter 11: Dangerous Alliance

901 Words
Ivy sat frozen in Adrian’s office, her mind racing. A choice. Charlotte or Adrian. One had lied. The other had manipulated her. But which one was the real threat? "Take your time," Adrian said, watching her. "But not too much time. The longer you hesitate, the more dangerous this becomes."* Ivy’s stomach twisted. "And what if I choose neither?" Adrian’s expression darkened. "Then you’ll be standing alone. And in this world, Ivy… that’s not a position you want to be in."* A chill ran down her spine. This wasn’t just about business. This was survival. And she wasn’t sure who to trust. 1. An Unexpected Encounter That night, Ivy couldn’t sleep. Her father’s name on those documents. Charlotte’s secrets. Adrian’s warning. She needed answers—from Charlotte. She grabbed her phone and typed a message: I need to see you. Now. Seconds later, Charlotte replied: Meet me at my place. Alone. Ivy hesitated, but she had no choice. She needed the truth. 2. Charlotte’s Confession Charlotte’s penthouse was dimly lit, the air thick with tension. "You shouldn’t have gone digging, Ivy," Charlotte said, pouring herself a glass of wine. "It’s not safe."* Ivy crossed her arms. "Neither is lying to me."* Charlotte sighed. "I did what I had to. To protect you."* "From what?" Charlotte’s grip on the glass tightened. "From Adrian."* Ivy’s breath hitched. "What are you talking about?" Charlotte met her gaze. "He didn’t just want Sterling Holdings, Ivy. He wanted you. And now, he has you exactly where he wants."* Ivy’s heart pounded. Had Adrian played her? Or was Charlotte twisting the truth? Either way— She was in danger. Ivy’s fingers clenched into fists at Charlotte’s words. "He wanted me?" she repeated, her voice sharp. "What does that mean?" Charlotte exhaled and set her glass down. "It means you were never just a secretary to him, Ivy. You were an asset—a key to something bigger. He needed you to find out what you knew, what connections you had, and whether you could be turned against me."* Ivy’s stomach twisted. "You’re saying he manipulated me."* "He does that to everyone," Charlotte said flatly. "You think you’re special? That man doesn’t make decisions based on emotions, Ivy. Everything he does is calculated."* Ivy swallowed hard. A part of her wanted to deny it. But hadn’t Adrian already admitted to using people? Hadn’t he tested her loyalty? She thought about the way he watched her. The way he always seemed one step ahead. Had she fallen for his game? "Why should I believe you?" Ivy asked. Charlotte studied her for a moment, then walked to a cabinet and pulled out a file. She handed it to Ivy. Ivy hesitated, then opened it—only to feel the air leave her lungs. Inside were surveillance photos of her and Adrian. Adrian watching her at the office. Adrian sitting in his car outside her apartment. Adrian speaking with a man Ivy didn’t recognize. "Who is this?" Ivy pointed to the man in the photo. Charlotte’s jaw tightened. "A fixer. Someone Adrian uses when he needs problems to disappear."* Ivy’s pulse pounded. "You think I’m a problem?" "I think you’re being played," Charlotte corrected. "And if you don’t choose wisely, Ivy, you won’t realize it until it’s too late."* Ivy shut the file, her heart racing. Everything she thought she knew was collapsing. Had Adrian really been watching her this whole time? And if so— Why? Ivy sat in silence, the weight of Charlotte’s words crushing her. Had Adrian really been watching her from the start? Had she been nothing more than a pawn in his game? Her mind screamed at her to run, to put as much distance between herself and both of them as possible. But she needed the truth. And there was only one way to get it. 1. The Confrontation The next morning, Ivy stormed into Adrian’s office without knocking. He looked up, his expression unreadable. "Ivy."* She threw the folder onto his desk. "Explain."* Adrian barely glanced at the surveillance photos. "You’ve been speaking with Charlotte."* "Of course I have!" Ivy snapped. "And she told me exactly what you are—a manipulator. A man who only plays people for his own gain. So tell me, Adrian—was I just a piece in your plan?" His jaw tightened. "I told you the truth, Ivy."* "Did you?" She glared at him. "Or did you only tell me what you wanted me to know?" For the first time, Adrian hesitated. And that silence told Ivy everything. Her stomach twisted. "You really did use me."* Adrian exhaled sharply. "It wasn’t supposed to be like this."* "Then what was it supposed to be?" Adrian’s gaze darkened. "I needed you to trust me."* Ivy’s breath hitched. "Why?" A muscle in his jaw twitched. "Because I knew, one day, you’d have to choose."* Her heart pounded. "Between you and Charlotte?" "Between the truth and a lie."* 2. The Truth Ivy felt her pulse in her throat. "Then tell me, Adrian. The real truth. No more games."* Adrian met her gaze, his expression unreadable. "The truth is, Ivy…" He hesitated. Then, finally— "I was never supposed to let you get this close."* Ivy’s breath caught. Because for the first time since meeting Adrian Graves— She saw the lie. And she realized the game wasn’t over. It was just beginning.
