Episode 2: The Dinner Invitation
Amara stood in the middle of the office, staring at her phone.
Daniel's words kept playing in her head.
“I can't stop thinking about you.”
She didn't know how to respond.
A billionaire had just asked her to dinner.
Not because of work.
Not because he needed something from her.
He wanted to take her to dinner.
“Amara?”
She looked up.
Sarah was standing in front of her.
“You've been staring at that phone for almost two minutes. What happened?”
“Nothing.”
Sarah folded her arms.
“Don't tell me nothing. You have that strange smile on your face.”
“I don't have a strange smile.”
“You do.”
Amara sighed.
“Daniel Carter just called me.”
Sarah's mouth dropped open.
“The chairman?”
“Yes.”
“What did he want?”
Amara hesitated.
“He asked me to have dinner with him.”
Sarah screamed quietly.
“Oh my God!”
“Keep your voice down!”
“Sorry, sorry.”
Sarah moved closer.
“So what did you say?”
“I haven't answered him.”
“Why not?”
“Because it's strange.”
“What is strange about it?”
“He is my boss.”
Sarah laughed.
“He owns the company. You are not dating him at work.”
Amara shook her head.
“I don't know, Sarah. I don't want trouble.”
“Maybe he likes you.”
Amara looked at her.
“Don't say that.”
“Why?”
“Because I don't want to think about it.”
Sarah smiled.
“Too late.”
Amara looked at her phone again.
The call had ended.
She stared at the number for a few seconds before finally typing a message.
“Okay. What time?”
She sent it before she could change her mind.
Almost immediately, her phone rang.
Daniel.
She answered.
“Hello?”
“I thought you were going to say no.”
Amara smiled.
“I almost did.”
“Why?”
“Because I don't know you.”
“Then dinner will give you a chance to know me.”
She didn't know what to say.
Daniel continued.
“I'll pick you up at seven.”
“No.”
There was silence.
“No?”
“You don't have to pick me up. I can meet you there.”
Daniel laughed.
“You don't trust me?”
“I don't know you well enough to trust you.”
“That is fair.”
He gave her the name of the restaurant.
“Seven o'clock?”
“Yes.”
“I'll be there.”
The call ended.
Amara placed her phone on the desk.
Sarah was staring at her.
“What?”
“You are going on a date with a billionaire.”
“It is not a date.”
“Dinner with a handsome billionaire is a date.”
Amara laughed.
“Whatever you say.”
At six-thirty that evening, Amara stood in front of her mirror.
She had changed her clothes three times.
Finally, she chose a simple blue dress.
She looked at herself.
“This is just dinner,” she whispered.
She grabbed her bag and left.
When she arrived at the restaurant, she immediately felt nervous.
The place was beautiful.
Soft music played in the background, and couples sat at different tables.
Then she saw Daniel.
He stood when he saw her.
For a moment, he simply stared.
Amara became uncomfortable.
“What?”
Daniel smiled.
“You look beautiful.”
She looked down.
“Thank you.”
He pulled out a chair for her.
“Please.”
She sat down.
Daniel took his seat opposite her.
A waiter came and handed them the menus.
Amara looked at hers.
“Have you been here before?” Daniel asked.
“No.”
“Why?”
“It's expensive.”
Daniel smiled.
“You don't have to worry about that tonight.”
Amara looked at him.
“I can pay for my own food.”
“I didn't say you couldn't.”
She smiled.
“Good.”
Daniel laughed.
“I like that.”
“What?”
“You are not afraid to speak your mind.”
Amara looked at him carefully.
“Most people probably don't talk to you like that.”
“They don't.”
“Why?”
“Because I'm their boss.”
“And you're not my boss right now?”
Daniel smiled.
“Tonight, I'm just Daniel.”
She nodded.
“Okay, Daniel.”
He smiled when she said his name.
They ordered their food.
As they waited, Daniel asked about her life.
Amara told him about her mother and how she had started working after finishing school.
She didn't tell him everything.
She didn't tell him about the man who had broken her heart.
She didn't tell him why she had stopped believing in love.
Daniel seemed to notice.
“You don't talk much about yourself.”
“I'm not used to it.”
“You can talk to me.”
Amara smiled.
“Maybe another time.”
Daniel nodded.
“I'll wait.”
Their food arrived.
They ate and talked for almost two hours.
Amara was surprised by how easy it was to talk to him.
At work, Daniel seemed serious and distant.
But tonight, he was different.
He was funny.
He listened.
He even laughed at her silly stories.
When dinner ended, Daniel looked at her.
“I enjoyed tonight.”
“So did I.”
“Can I see you again?”
Amara hesitated.
“You're moving too fast.”
Daniel smiled.
“Then I'll slow down.”
She laughed.
“Good.”
They left the restaurant together.
Outside, Daniel's car was waiting.
Amara looked at it.
“You really are rich.”
Daniel laughed.
“I've been trying to tell you.”
“I thought people exaggerated.”
“About what?”
“About billionaires.”
“What do they say?”
“That they are arrogant.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Do I seem arrogant?”
“Sometimes.”
He laughed.
“Fair enough.”
They stood there for a moment.
Then Daniel stepped closer.
Amara's heart began beating faster.
He looked into her eyes.
She could feel the distance between them disappearing.
But Daniel stopped.
He didn't touch her.
Instead, he smiled.
“Goodnight, Amara.”
“Goodnight.”
She entered a taxi and watched him through the window.
Daniel stood there until the taxi drove away.
For the first time in a long time, Amara smiled to herself.
Maybe she was beginning to like him.
And that scared her.
The next morning, Amara arrived at work early.
She sat at her desk and tried to focus.
But she couldn't.
She kept remembering Daniel's smile.
Sarah walked over.
“So?”
“So what?”
“How was your date?”
“It wasn't a date.”
Sarah rolled her eyes.
“Okay. How was your not-a-date?”
Amara laughed.
“It was nice.”
“Only nice?”
“Very nice.”
Sarah smiled.
“I knew it.”
Before Amara could respond, the office became quiet.
Everyone suddenly stood up.
Daniel had entered.
He walked through the office with his usual serious expression.
Amara looked at him.
Their eyes met.
For a second, Daniel smiled.
Then he walked into his office.
Sarah whispered,
“He likes you.”
“Stop.”
“I saw that smile.”
“Sarah!”
They both laughed.
But neither of them noticed the woman standing near the entrance.
She had watched everything.
Her eyes were fixed on Amara.
Her name was Victoria.
She had known Daniel for years.
And she had always believed that one day, she would become his wife.
She walked toward Daniel's office and knocked.
“Come in.”
Victoria entered.
Daniel looked up.
His expression changed immediately.
“Victoria?”
She smiled.
“Surprised to see me?”
“What are you doing here?”
“I came to see you.”
“This isn't a good time.”
Victoria ignored him and sat down.
“I heard you had dinner with someone last night.”
Daniel's face became serious.
“Who told you?”
“It doesn't matter.”
“Victoria, my personal life is none of your business.”
She smiled.
“Maybe. But you should be careful about the people you bring into your life.”
Daniel stared at her.
“What are you talking about?”
Victoria stood.
“I think you know.”
She walked toward the door.
Before leaving, she turned around.
“Some people don't love you for who you are, Daniel. They love you for your money.”
Daniel said nothing.
Victoria left.
Outside the office, she looked directly at Amara.
Amara looked back, confused.
She had never met her before.
Victoria smiled coldly.
“This should be interesting.”
And Amara had no idea that the arrival of Victoria was about to turn her new relationship with Daniel into something much more complicated.
