I blinked, my breath still uneven, as I bit my lip. “I—” The word scraped out, weak. I stepped back, my palms suddenly clammy. “I’m… sorry, sir. I… I’m not thinking straight.” Maximus didn’t move. He didn’t even flinch. He just watched me and I can’t help but look at his lips. Heat rushed up my neck, and I hated that I couldn’t look away. He was already watching me—no, studying me—with this kind of focus that made the shiver down my spine.
