The new branch was sleek and modern, all clean glass panels and polished steel. The company logo was displayed in bold letters above the reception desk. It was the official launch of Emerson Global’s newest office branch. It was quite a big deal, judging by the number of high-profile guests present. The lobby was filled with employees, investors in tailored attire, and media crews setting up cameras. Waiters in black vests moved through the crowd with trays of champagne and other more special food. I stayed near one corner, greeting a few familiar faces but mostly observing.
