I wasn’t asleep long, though, when I heard something. At first, I thought it was simply Sawyer coming down the hall to get into bed with me, like he did many nights. But then I realized that the rustling sound was coming from outside, right below my window. I stood up and looked out in time to see someone fling something at my house. The sound of shattering glass brought me fully awake, and I bolted into Sawyer’s room with my phone in hand. I was just about to dial 911 when I heard Santiago say, “Stay up there, Paisley. I’ve called for back-up.” I didn’t know it was possible to be both relieved and more terrified by the same phrase, but “called for back-up” brought both of those emotions to the fore.
