Elliot was a year ahead of Julian and me in high school. As a member of the disciplinary committee and an athlete, Elliot caught Julian and me climbing over the wall and dragged us to the office like we were misbehaving kids.
We couldn't beat him, nor could we outrun him. Over time, we actually became good friends.
Later, when Julian got into trouble with some thugs, Elliot stepped in to help. The next time I saw them, they were arm in arm, happily calling each other brothers.
Elliot stood in front of me, smoothing out the wrinkles on my clothes.
"I just got back and heard you got divorced."

Elliot, don't laugh; it takes me back to those high school days when you were the boss.
