Chapter 2

Finally, they arrived at a clearing. In the center of the clearing stood an enormous tree, its trunk twisted and gnarled with age. The woman walked over to the tree and began to climb, her movements swift and agile. Tyler followed her, his heart keep pounding. As they climbed higher, the tree seemed to grow taller, the branches thinner and more fragile. Finally, they reached a platform high up in the tree. The woman turned to Tyler and spoke in a low, raspy voice. “This is the heart of the forest.” Tyler looked around, but saw nothing out of the ordinary. The platform was small, with a railing that surrounded a large, stone door. The door was adorned with strange symbols and markings. Tyler’s eyes were drawn to something else. A skull, sitting on a pedestal in the center of the room. It was the skull of the skeleton he had found earlier. The woman spoke, her voice low and raspy. “This is the guardian of the forest,” she said. “It has been watching over this place for centuries.” "There are pythons with diamonds on their coils," the woman said. The woman glanced around nervously, as if she feared being overheard. "Some pythons have diamonds embedded in their coils, while others have them on their foreheads." Tyler's mind reeled as he processed the woman's words. He had always assumed that the python with the diamond on its coil was the only one, but now he was faced with the possibility that there were many more. Tyler's grip on his pistol tightened. "Now that I know the truth, I need to know more. What's the difference between the pythons?" The woman hesitated, choosing her words carefully. "The pythons with diamonds on their coils are said to possess healing powers. They can cure even the most deadly diseases." Tyler had always thought of the python as a simple treasure, but now he was faced with the possibility that it was so much more. "And what about the pythons with diamonds on their foreheads?" Tyler asked. The woman's eyes locked onto his. "They are said to be associated with supernatural abilities." “They’re ancient,” she said. Tyler’s eyes narrowed. “What do you mean?” The woman glanced around nervously, as if she feared being overheard. “The pythons with diamonds have lived for over 600 years.” Tyler’s mind reeled as he processed the woman’s words. He had always assumed that the pythons were ordinary animals, but now he was faced with the possibility that they were something much more extraordinary. “How is that possible?” Tyler asked, his voice laced with skepticism. The woman’s eyes locked onto his. “They’re not ordinary pythons. They’re…special.” Tyler’s grip on his pistol tightened. “What do you mean by ‘special’?” The woman hesitated. “They have the power to heal, and they also have the power to kill.” Tyler’s eyes widened as he processed the woman’s words. He had always thought of the pythons as simple animals, but now he was faced with the possibility that they were something much more complex. The woman’s eyes locked onto Tyler. “If you encounter the one with the wrong diamond, you would be dead.” “What do you mean?” Tyler asked. The woman glanced around nervously, as if she feared being overheard. “There are many pythons in this forest, each with a diamond on its forehead. But only few of them has the right diamond.” Tyler’s eyes narrowed. “What’s the difference?” The woman continued. “The pythons with the wrong diamonds are…altered. They’re not like normal pythons. They’re faster, stronger, and more aggressive.” Tyler’s grip on his pistol tightened. “And what happens if I encounter one of them?” The woman’s eyes locked onto his, and Tyler saw a glimmer of fear there. “You’ll be dead. They won’t hesitate to attack." “The diamonds are not always visible,” she said. “The python usually hides the diamonds during the day and brings them out only at midnight.” Tyler’s mind reeled as he processed the woman’s words. He had been searching for the python during the day, but now he realized that he had been going about it all wrong. The woman continued. “The python is said to be a guardian of the diamonds. It hides them to protect them from those who would seek them.” Tyler’s eyes widened as he realized the significance of the woman’s words. The diamonds were not just simple gemstones. As Tyler prepared to leave the woman’s hut, she grasped his arm, her eyes filled with a deep concern. “Always be careful, Tyler,” she whispered urgently. “The jungle is full of dangers, and you are not the only one searching for the diamond.” Tyler nodded, his mind already focused on the challenges ahead. “I will,” he promised. “I’ll be careful.” The woman’s grip on his arm tightened. “And if you finally lay your hands on the diamond, hide it in a dark blanket,” she instructed. “Don’t let anyone see it, not even a glimpse.” Tyler’s eyes narrowed. “Why?” he asked. The woman’s expression was grave. “The diamond has a power that can drive the pythons mad,” she warned. “If the python sees it, they will stop at nothing to take it, and eventually kill you without mercy.” Tyler’s mind reeled as he processed the woman’s words. He had heard stories of the diamond’s power, but he had never believed them. Now, he wasn’t so sure. “Thank you for warning me,” Tyler said, his voice filled with gratitude. The woman’s eyes locked onto his, and for a moment, they just stared at each other. “Be careful, Tyler,” she whispered again. “I don’t want anything to happen to you.” Tyler nodded, feeling a sense of determination. He would be careful, and he would find the diamond. “I have to go,” Tyler said finally. The woman nodded, her expression unreadable. “I know.” Tyler hesitated, feeling a pang of uncertainty. He had grown accustomed to the woman’s presence, and the thought of leaving her behind was unsettling. But he knew he had to press on. He had to find the real diamonds, no matter what dangers lay ahead. “I’ll be back,” Tyler said, trying to sound reassuring. The woman smiled, a faint, sad smile. “I’ll be here.” Tyler nodded, feeling a sense of resolve. He turned the handle and stepped out into the unknown. Tyler drew his pistol, his senses on high alert, and began to make his way deeper into the jungle. The woman watched him go, her eyes filled with a deep concern. She knew the dangers of the jungle, and she knew the power of the diamond. As he walked, the silence seemed to grow thicker, more oppressive. Tyler could feel eyes watching him, could sense the presence of unseen dangers lurking just out of sight. But he pressed on, driven by a fierce determination. He had to find the real diamonds, had to uncover the secrets of the jungle. The sun beat down on him, the heat and humidity making every step feel like a battle. Tyler’s canteen was almost empty, and he knew he had to find water soon. As he rounded a bend in the path, Tyler caught sight of a clearing up ahead. He approached cautiously, his pistol at the ready, and as he entered the clearing, he saw something that made his heart skip a beat. A massive stone statue stood in the center of the clearing, its surface covered in intricate carvings. And at its base, a small inscription was etched into the stone: “Turn back now, while you still can.” Tyler’s eyes narrowed as he read the inscription. Who had written this? And what did they mean? He looked around the clearing, but there was no sign of anyone. The statue seemed to loom over him, its presence both mesmerizing and unsettling. Tyler knew he had to make a decision. He could turn back, abandon his quest for the diamonds, and return to the woman. Or he could press on, ignoring the warning, and see where the journey took him. Tyler’s grip on his pistol tightened. He knew what he had to do. With a deep breath, he stepped forward, past the statue, and into the unknown.
