The First Cut*

*CHAPTER 7: THE FIRST CUT* Lyra made the trade before sunrise. She didn’t tell Yan. She left a note on his pillow. Three words. _Don’t follow me._ Then she walked to the olive tree alone. The woman with her mother’s face was already waiting. Behind her, the possessed villagers stood in a circle. Knives in their hands. Black eyes. And the boy with Lyra’s eyes sat on the ground, carving shapes in the dirt with blood. _"Punctual,"_ the King said through her mother’s mouth. _"I like that."_ Lyra stepped into the circle. She had a knife. She had a bowl. And she had her sleeve rolled up. "What do you want?" Lyra asked. _"Your blood,"_ the King said. _"Willingly given. Three cuts. One for each time you defied me."_ Lyra didn’t flinch. She cut her palm. Red-black blood. It hissed when it hit the bowl. The mark on her wrist drank it and sighed. "One," Lyra said. The woman smiled with Lyra’s mother’s smile. The boy clapped. Lyra cut again. Deeper this time. "Two." The silver in the bowl began to swirl. Like it was calling to something. "Three," Lyra said. She pressed the blade to her wrist, right over the mark. And stopped. Because the olive tree screamed. Not a sound. A memory. It hit Lyra like a wave. #### She was somewhere else. A Veil. A boy. Maybe 16. Scared. Holding a knife. And behind him, a village burning. _"Take me,"_ the boy said. _"Not them. Me."_ The Veil opened. It took his blood. And it gave him power. And it took everything else. His name. His home. His heart. When he came out, he wasn’t a boy anymore. He was the King. The memory broke. Lyra was on her knees in the dirt. The bowl was overturned. Her blood was in the earth. The woman with her mother’s face was staring at her. _"You saw,"_ the King said. _"Good. Now you understand. That’s what happens when you give willingly."_ Lyra looked at her hand. The cut was already closing. But the skin around it was black. Spreading. "You lied," Lyra said. "It’s not a trade. It’s a trap." _"Everything is a trade,"_ the King said. _"You give me blood, I give you time. That’s the deal."_ "How much time?" _"Until the next cut."_ The boy with Lyra’s eyes stood up. "Are we done? I’m hungry." The woman nodded. And the circle of villagers turned and walked away. Back to their homes. Back to their lives. Like nothing happened. Lyra was left alone under the olive tree. Bleeding. Shaking. #### Yan found her an hour later. He didn’t say anything about the note. He just knelt and wrapped her hand. "You did it," he said. "I had to," Lyra said. "You didn’t have to do it alone." "I didn’t want you to turn into light faster." Yan’s jaw tightened. The silver on his chest had spread another inch overnight. "And now?" he asked. "Now we have time," Lyra said. "He said until the next cut." "That’s not time," Yan said. "That’s a countdown." They went home. For three days, nothing happened. No whispers. No rain. No possessed villagers. Yan slept. Lyra watched him sleep. And every night, she checked her hand. The black was spreading. Up her wrist. To her elbow. On the fourth night, it reached her shoulder. And the mark opened its mouth again. _"Time’s up, daughter."_ #### They tried everything. Elder Jon made poultices. Salt. Iron. Prayer. Nothing worked. The black kept spreading. "It’s not poison," Jon said. "It’s a claim. He’s claiming you piece by piece. When it reaches your heart, you’re his." "How long?" Yan asked. "A week. Maybe less." Lyra looked at her arm. Half of it was black now. "It doesn’t hurt," she said. "That’s the worst part. It doesn’t hurt." Yan took her hand. His was cold. Hers was colder. "Then we cut it off," Yan said. "No," Lyra said. "Yes," Yan said. "Before it reaches you." "And what? I live with one arm? And he just asks for the other one next week?" They didn’t have an answer. That night, Lyra dreamed. She was back at the Veil. But this time she wasn’t alone. Yan was there. And he was cutting his palm too. _"Blood for blood,"_ the King said. _"That’s the only rule."_ Lyra woke screaming. Yan was already there. "You dreamed it too," he said. "I did," Lyra said. They looked at each other. "We do it together," Lyra said. "No," Yan said. "Yes," Lyra said. "If he wants blood, we give it. Both of us. At the same time. Maybe it splits the price." "Or maybe it takes us both," Yan said. Lyra touched the silver on his chest. "Then we go together." #### They chose the olive tree. Again. Dawn. No one else. Just them. Lyra held out her black arm. Yan held out his silver one. "On three," Lyra said. "On three," Yan said. "One." "Two." "Three." They cut. Lyra’s blood: red-black. Yan’s blood: silver. It hit the ground at the same time. The earth shook. The Veil didn’t open. It answered. A voice. Not the King’s. Older. _Blood for blood. Given willingly. The price is paid._ The black on Lyra’s arm stopped spreading. It receded. Back to her wrist. Back to her mark. And then... Gone. The silver on Yan’s chest stopped too. It pulled back to his neck. They both collapsed. When they woke, the sun was high. And the olive tree was blooming. White flowers. In summer. Elder Jon was sitting beside them. "It worked," Jon said. "The Veil accepted both. It’s confused. It doesn’t know who to take." "So we bought more time?" Lyra asked. "You bought a choice," Jon said. "The King can’t claim one without the other now. And he hates that." Lyra looked at Yan. He looked at her. "Did it hurt?" Lyra asked. "Yes," Yan said. "Me too," Lyra said. They laughed. It hurt to laugh. #### That night, the King sent no message. No rain. No possessed people. Just silence. And in the silence, Lyra realized something. The first cut was the hardest. Not because of the pain. But because it was the first time she chose. Not as the King’s daughter. Not as a weapon. As herself. And Yan chose with her. At midnight, they went back to the roof. The stars were out. No Veil. "I’m scared," Lyra said. "Me too," Yan said. "What if the next cut comes?" "Then we cut together again," Yan said. "Until he runs out of rules to use against us." Lyra leaned on his shoulder. The silver in his hair was warm. Her arm was her own again. Below them, Lumeria slept. Safe. For now. And somewhere far beyond, the Demon King was screaming. Because for the first time in a thousand years... Someone had paid his price. And walked away. #### The olive tree whispered before dawn. _He will come himself next._ _Not through blood. Through you._ Lyra didn’t tell Yan. She just held his hand tighter. Because the first cut was over. And the second one... Would be worse. but yan was not afraid it
