The moment Elara crossed the threshold, the heavy iron door groaned shut behind her with a deafening crash. She spun around instinctively, reaching for the handle, but it refused to move. No matter how hard she pulled, the ancient door remained sealed as though it had never opened at all. A cold knot tightened in her stomach. She was trapped.
Taking a slow breath, Elara forced herself to look ahead. The chamber before her was unlike any room she had ever seen within the Temple of Eternity. Towering shelves curved along the circular walls, each filled with books bound in silver, crystal, and leather so old they seemed ready to crumble into dust. Strange blue flames floated in the air without candles to hold them, casting an eerie glow over the polished black floor. Ancient symbols covered every stone pillar, pulsing faintly as though the room itself were alive.
The whisper returned, no longer distant but warm and unmistakably clear.
"You came."
Elara's breath caught in her throat. "Who's there?" she asked, her voice barely louder than a whisper.
Silence answered her.
Then, somewhere deeper within the chamber, pages began turning one after another. The sound echoed through the vast room like a thousand invisible hands searching for something long forgotten.
With cautious steps, Elara followed the sound. Every instinct urged her to turn back, but curiosity burned brighter than fear. The deeper she walked into the archive, the stronger the strange pull inside her chest became. It was not forcing her forward. Instead, it felt as though something ancient had recognized her and was patiently waiting for her to arrive.
The shelves gradually gave way to a magnificent circular hall. At its center stood a raised platform carved from black stone. Seven towering statues surrounded it, each depicting a hooded guardian with one hand stretched toward the sky and the other resting over its heart. Thick silver chains extended from each statue, meeting at a single object resting upon the pedestal.
A book.
It was larger than any book Elara had ever seen, bound in black leather that reflected no light. Delicate silver runes shimmered across its cover, constantly shifting into symbols she could not understand. Although the room was perfectly still, the pages fluttered gently as if stirred by an invisible breeze.
"This..." Elara whispered, "...can't be."
She had spent years copying ancient legends in the temple library. Every apprentice had heard stories about the Book of Lost Souls, though none believed it truly existed. According to legend, it had been hidden by the First Keepers after a terrible war between light and darkness. Some claimed it granted unimaginable power. Others believed it was a prison that held the names of souls too dangerous to enter either life or death.
No one had ever claimed to have seen it.
Until now.
As Elara stepped closer, the silver chains surrounding the book began to tremble. A faint metallic rattle echoed through the chamber, growing louder with every heartbeat. The glowing runes along the walls flared brilliantly, bathing the archive in silver light.
"No..." she murmured, taking an uneasy step backward.
One of the chains snapped.
The sharp crack echoed like thunder.
Then another followed.
And another.
Within seconds, every chain binding the ancient book had shattered, falling onto the stone floor with deafening clangs that shook the entire chamber.
The book slowly lifted from the pedestal.
It floated effortlessly into the air.
Its cover opened on its own.
Golden light poured from its pages, filling every corner of the archive. Strange symbols rose into the air like glowing fireflies before circling Elara in silent spirals. She shielded her eyes, but the light felt warm rather than blinding. It carried with it a strange sense of familiarity, as though she had known it long before she could remember.
The pages turned rapidly. Once. Twice.Dozens of times. Finally, they stopped. The first page was empty.
Elara stared at it in confusion until dark ink slowly spread across the parchment without any hand touching it. Letters appeared one after another, forming words that made her blood run cold.
ELARA ASHBOURNE.
Her own name.
She stumbled backward, unable to believe what she was seeing.
"How...?"
More words appeared beneath the first.
Blood of the First Keeper.
Bearer of the Final Oath.
Chosen by the Book.
A sudden pain shot through Elara's right hand.
She cried out, clutching her wrist as a brilliant silver mark appeared beneath her skin. It spread across the back of her hand like glowing vines before forming the same mysterious symbol she had seen inside the fallen book in the library—a circle surrounded by seven stars with a single eye at its center.
The mark burned for only a moment before the pain vanished completely.
The chamber fell silent.
Then every statue surrounding the pedestal lowered its head at once.
Stone groaned against stone.
Elara froze.
"They're... bowing."
A deep voice echoed from every direction, ancient enough to make the walls tremble.
"The Last Keeper has awakened."
Before she could understand the words, a violent explosion shook the temple above. Dust rained from the ceiling as the blue flames flickered wildly. Somewhere beyond the sealed doors, bells rang frantically and frightened voices filled the corridors.
The temple was under attack.
A second explosion followed, far closer than the first.
Cracks raced across the walls of the Forbidden Archive, and pieces of stone crashed onto the floor. The peaceful silence that had protected the temple for centuries was gone, replaced by screams echoing through the mountain.
Then another voice drifted from the open pages of the Book.
Unlike the first, this one was calm, gentle, almost sorrowful.
"They have come for me."
The glowing book slowly floated toward Elara until it hovered only inches from her trembling hands.
"Take me... before the Soul King does."
At that exact moment, a monstrous roar thundered through the mountain, so powerful that the entire temple shook as though something enormous had awakened beneath its foundations.
