The black SUV sped through the rain-soaked streets of Palermo in complete silence.
Elena Romano sat rigidly in the back seat, her wrists free but her options nonexistent. Every few seconds, she glanced at the tinted windows, hoping to recognize a landmark that could help her escape later.
There was nothing.
Only darkness.
Across from her sat Luciano De Santis, his attention fixed on a file resting on his lap. He hadn't spoken since they left the alley.
It was as if kidnapping people was simply another task on his schedule.
Elena clenched her fists.
"You enjoy this, don't you?"
Luciano didn't look up.
"Enjoy what?"
"Terrifying innocent people."
He calmly turned a page.
"I don't waste my time terrifying innocent people."
Her eyes narrowed.
"You kidnapped me."
"I detained you."
She let out a bitter laugh.
"That's your version of the truth?"
"My version is the only one that matters."
His arrogance ignited her temper.
"If you think I'm going to help you find my father, you're wasting your time."
"I already told you," Luciano replied without emotion. "I don't expect you to."
"Then why am I here?"
"For leverage."
His honesty stunned her.
No lies.
No excuses.
Just cold, brutal truth.
She looked away, refusing to let him see how much his words unsettled her.
After nearly an hour, the SUV left the city behind and climbed a winding road overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.
Massive iron gates came into view.
They stood nearly fifteen feet high, engraved with the crest of the De Santis family,a crowned lion gripping a sword.
The gates opened automatically.
Beyond them stretched an enormous estate.
Elena's breath caught.
A grand stone mansion overlooked perfectly manicured gardens. Marble fountains lined the driveway, while armed guards patrolled every corner of the property.
Security cameras rotated silently above the entrance.
This wasn't a home.
It was a fortress.
The SUV stopped beneath a covered entrance.
One of the guards opened the door.
Luciano stepped out first.
Rain rolled off his black coat as though even the weather refused to touch him.
He didn't look back.
He simply walked inside.
The guards gestured for Elena to follow.
She hesitated.
One of them spoke respectfully.
"Please, Miss Romano."
She climbed out.
The entrance hall was larger than her entire apartment building.
Crystal chandeliers hung from ceilings painted with centuries-old frescoes. A sweeping staircase curved toward the upper floors, while polished marble reflected the soft glow of antique wall lamps.
Everything whispered unimaginable wealth.
Elena hated it.
She followed Luciano through the mansion until they entered a spacious study lined with bookshelves and dark oak furniture.
He removed his coat and placed it neatly over a chair.
Only then did he finally look at her.
"You'll stay here until your father contacts me."
"I'm not a prisoner."
"You are."
"I've done nothing wrong."
Luciano folded his hands behind his back.
"Neither have I."
She stared at him in disbelief.
"You call this justice?"
"I call it necessity."
Before Elena could answer, someone knocked on the door.
"Enter."
A man in his mid-thirties walked in wearing a charcoal suit.
His posture was military.
His expression is unreadable.
"Boss."
Luciano nodded.
"Luca."
Elena immediately recognized him as someone who inspired respect without demanding it.
"Luca Ferraro," Luciano said. "My consigliere."
Luca inclined his head politely toward Elena.
"Miss Romano."
Unlike the others, there was no hostility in his voice.
Only professionalism.
"The guests have arrived," Luca informed Luciano.
"They're early."
"They insisted."
Luciano sighed almost imperceptibly.
"I'll deal with them."
As he reached the door, he paused beside Elena.
"Don't leave this room."
She folded her arms.
"Or what?"
His steel-gray eyes met hers.
"You'll discover why people don't ignore my instructions."
Then he walked away.
The heavy door closed behind him.
Silence filled the room.
Elena immediately searched for an escape.
The windows were reinforced.
The door was locked from the outside.
She checked another entrance leading to a private balcony.
Locked.
"This can't be happening," she whispered.
Her phone.
She reached into her coat pocket.
Gone.
Of course.
She paced anxiously.
Somewhere in this mansion was the most feared man in Sicily.
And somewhere beyond its walls...
Her father was hiding.
A soft knock interrupted her thoughts.
The door opened.
An elderly woman entered carrying a tray.
She wore a neat black dress with a white apron.
Her silver hair was tied into a tidy bun.
"You must be Elena."
Elena stepped back cautiously.
"Who are you?"
The woman smiled warmly.
"My name is Maria Bellini."
"I'm the head housekeeper."
She placed the tray on a nearby table.
"I brought you something warm to eat."
"I'm not hungry."
Maria looked at her with gentle understanding.
"I've worked in this house for nearly thirty years."
"I've seen many frightened people."
"But none ever survived by refusing food."
Elena remained silent.
Maria sighed softly.
"Mr. De Santis may appear heartless..."
She stopped herself.
"No."
"He is heartless most of the time."
To Elena's surprise, the older woman chuckled.
"But he has never allowed anyone under this roof to be mistreated."
Elena looked skeptical.
"He kidnapped me."
Maria couldn't argue with that.
Instead, she quietly said,
"Eat while it's warm."
Then she left.
Alone again, Elena stared at the untouched tray.
Fresh bread.
Soup.
Tea.
Her stomach growled despite her anger.
She hadn't eaten since the afternoon.
Reluctantly, she picked up the spoon.
Just as she took the first bite...
A loud gunshot echoed somewhere in the mansion.
Elena froze.
Then another shot rang out.
Followed by shouting.
She rushed to the window.
Outside, guards sprinted across the courtyard with weapons drawn.
Something had happened.
And instinct told her one terrifying truth.
Being inside Luciano De Santis's fortress didn't make her safe.
It had made her part of a war.
The second gunshot echoed through the mansion, followed by the blaring of an alarm.
Elena's pulse quickened.
Outside, armed guards raced across the courtyard, taking up defensive positions behind stone pillars and armored vehicles.
"What is happening?" she whispered.
The study door flew open.
Luca Ferraro stepped inside, his usually composed face tense.
"Miss Romano, stay away from the windows."
"What's going on?"
"I need you to do exactly as I say."
His tone left no room for argument.
Another burst of gunfire erupted outside.
Instinctively, Elena flinched.
"Someone's attacking the mansion?"
Luca glanced toward the window before answering.
"A warning."
"A warning?"
"They're testing our security."
Her confusion deepened.
"Who are they?"
"I'm not at liberty to discuss that."
She frowned.
"So I'm supposed to stand here while people try to kill us?"
"They're not trying to kill you."
His words unsettled her even more.
"They're here for Mr. De Santis."
Before Elena could respond, the sound of heavy footsteps echoed down the hallway.
The door opened again.
Luciano entered.
His white shirt was stained with small drops of blood.
Not his own.
He calmly removed his suit jacket and handed it to Luca.
"Any casualties?"
"Two guards with minor injuries," Luca replied.
"The intruders?"
"They didn't make it past the outer gate."
Luciano nodded once.
"As expected."
Elena stared at him in disbelief.
"You act like this is normal."
"It is."
"You could have been killed!"
Luciano looked at her with quiet indifference.
"If they wanted me dead, they would've needed better men."
His confidence was almost infuriating.
"People are shooting at your house, and you're acting like it's nothing!"
"It's Tuesday."
She blinked.
"What?"
"It usually happens on Tuesdays."
For a second, Elena wasn't sure whether he was serious.
Judging by Luca's expression, he was.
She shook her head.
"You people are insane."
Luciano ignored the comment.
Instead, he walked toward a cabinet, poured himself a glass of whiskey, and took a slow sip.
Only then did he speak.
"They came because they heard I had a guest."
Elena's stomach tightened.
"Me?"
"They're curious."
"Why?"
"You've been missing for less than two hours."
"And somehow..."
He turned to face her.
"...every major mafia family in Sicily already knows you're here."
She felt the blood drain from her face.
"How?"
"Because someone leaked the information."
Luciano's gray eyes darkened.
"Which means I have a traitor."
For the first time since meeting him, Elena saw genuine anger beneath his calm exterior.
Not explosive rage.
Something colder.
Far more dangerous.
Luca broke the silence.
"I've already begun investigating."
"Good."
"No one leaves the estate until we know who spoke."
Luciano set his glass down.
"If there's a snake inside my house..."
"...I'll cut off its head."
Elena shivered.
She believed him.
Every word.
A soft knock interrupted them.
Another guard entered.
"Boss."
"What is it?"
"The doctors have finished treating the injured men."
"Any fatalities?"
"No."
"Good."
The guard hesitated.
"There's... one more thing."
Luciano raised an eyebrow.
"A woman is here requesting to see you."
"I didn't schedule any visitors."
"She refused to leave."
The guard swallowed.
"It's Miss Isabella Conti."
The atmosphere shifted instantly.
Even Luca sighed.
Elena noticed the subtle change.
"Who's Isabella?"
Luciano didn't answer.
Instead, he looked at the guard.
"Tell her I'm busy."
"We tried."
"And?"
"She said she'll wait all night if necessary."
Luciano pinched the bridge of his nose.
"Persistent as always."
Elena folded her arms.
"So she knows you well."
He finally looked at her.
"She used to."
Before Elena could ask another question, a woman's voice echoed confidently from the hallway.
"You always did hate being kept waiting, Luciano."
The study door opened before anyone could stop her.
A stunning brunette walked in wearing an elegant crimson dress beneath a black coat.
Diamond earrings sparkled beneath the chandelier.
She carried herself like someone who belonged there.
Her sharp green eyes landed immediately on Elena.
For a long moment...
Neither woman spoke.
Then Isabella Conti smiled.
It wasn't friendly.
"So..."
She looked Elena up and down.
"This is the girl everyone's talking about."
Elena met her gaze without backing down.
"And you are?"
"Isabella Conti."
She stepped closer.
"I was the woman Luciano was supposed to marry."
Silence settled over the room.
Elena looked at Luciano.
He remained expressionless.
"You didn't tell her?" Isabella asked, amusement dancing in her eyes.
Luciano's voice was flat.
"It wasn't relevant."
"Oh, I think it is."
She turned back to Elena.
"Be careful."
Her smile widened.
"Nothing in Luciano's world comes without a price."
Luciano's patience finally snapped.
"Enough."
The single word silenced the room.
Isabella's smile faded slightly.
"I came to warn you."
"I don't need warnings."
"You do this time."
She reached into her handbag and placed a sealed envelope on the desk.
"My people intercepted a message."
Luciano picked it up but didn't open it immediately.
"Read it."
He broke the seal.
As his eyes moved across the page, every trace of emotion disappeared from his face.
Luca noticed.
"What is it?"
Luciano folded the paper.
"They've found Don Vittorio Romano."
Elena's heart stopped.
Her father's hiding place had been discovered.
Luciano slowly lifted his eyes to meet hers.
"The hunt..."
"...has just begun."
