‘No way!’ she shouted down the phone line. ‘Kelly, tell me everything. How far along is she?’
The jam sandwich Annie had made herself for dinner sat untouched on the table, ignored in favour of the drama unfolding down the crackly line that was her only connection to the outside world. Talking about normal human dramas had sounded like bliss when she’d first heard her friend’s voice, but Kelly’s news had crossed a significant boundary when the words ‘Sarah’s pregnant’ had echoed around the receiver.
Kelly’s voice was a bit shrill, as if she wasn’t sure if she was supposed to sound happy or upset. ‘She’s nearly twelve weeks, but she looks like she’s about twenty. The doctor scanned her. She’s having twins.’
