Chapter 5: Threshold

275 Words
There had to be a limit. Everything had one. A breaking point. A threshold. Gunther just hadn’t found his. Yet. The room was darker this time. More controlled. Private. No staff. No observers. Only Elias stood near the door, arms crossed, watching carefully. “I don’t like this,” Elias said. Gunther ignored him. The system in the room had been recalibrated—stronger stimuli, sharper contrasts, more aggressive triggers. “If your body responds to nothing,” Elias continued, “forcing it isn’t going to fix it.” Gunther adjusted the settings. “Increase intensity.” “Gunther—” “Do it.” Elias hesitated. Then complied. The room shifted instantly. Light sharpened. Sound deepened. The air changed—heavier, more invasive. Gunther stepped into the center. Waiting. Seconds passed. Then longer. His breathing remained steady. His expression unchanged. Nothing. Elias watched, tension building. “This isn’t working.” Gunther didn’t respond. He moved closer to the panel. Pushed it further. Beyond recommended limits. “Gunther.” Still nothing. No reaction. No break. Just the same— Endless— Silence inside him. Then— The system overloaded. A sharp flicker. The lights cut out. The room dropped into darkness. Elias cursed under his breath. “That’s enough.” Gunther stood still. In the dark. Waiting. Hoping— For something. Anything. But even now— There was nothing. When the lights returned, Gunther didn’t move. Elias looked at him carefully. “Did you feel anything?” A pause. Then— “No.” That night, for the first time— Gunther didn’t feel empty. He felt— Aware. Of how permanent it might be.
