Luna woke to pain, not just from the collar, but from silver chains binding her wrists. She was in a basement, stone walls damp with moisture. Candles provided flickering light, casting shadows that danced like demons.
"Finally awake." Tom Riverdale stepped from the shadows, and Luna gasped. Gone was the weak, scholarly second son she remembered. This Tom radiated power—dark, unnatural power that made her skin crawl.
"You're not a wolf," she whispered, understanding flooding through her.
Tom smiled. "Half right. My mother wasn't a wolf, she was a witch. Father never knew, of course. He thought she was just a pretty human he'd charmed." He circled her slowly. "I inherited her gifts. Gifts that let me hide my true nature, manipulate scents, create curses that even Elder Margaret couldn't break."
"You killed her too."
"Eventually. She figured out what I was, threatened to expose me. Couldn't have that." Tom crouched in front of her. "You know, I actually liked Jason. But he was in my way. He had everything, the Alpha inheritance, the pack's love, a true mate. All because he was firstborn, purely wolf."
"So you manipulated Marcus."
"Your brother was pathetically easy to control. A few threats about revealing his preferences, a promise of power once I was heir, and he did whatever I asked." Tom stood. "I didn't expect you to show up that night. That was lucky. Though I did feel bad when Marcus insisted on the collar. I argued for a quick death."
Luna tested the chains. Silver burned, but she pulled anyway. "Kai will find me."
"Oh, I'm counting on it." Tom pulled out an ancient book, the grimoire. "See, I've been studying mother's work. There's a ritual, one that can steal an Alpha's power if performed right. I need three things: an Alpha's mate, an Alpha's blood, and an Alpha's willing sacrifice."
"He won't—"
"Won't he? To save your life?" Tom opened the grimoire. "The collar comes off if he trades his life for yours. Simple exchange. His Alpha power transfers to me, making me strong enough to challenge any Alpha, even my father."
"The pack will never accept you."
"They will when I reveal that Father has been slowly going mad. Paranoid delusions, attacking packmates, unfit to lead." Tom began drawing symbols on the floor with ash. "All true, by the way. My mother's death cursed him. He just doesn't know it yet."
The collar pulsed, and Luna bit back a scream. She could feel her wolf fading, dying. Hours left, maybe less.
"Kai's too smart to fall for this."
"Is he? He's already on his way. My cousin delivered the message perfectly, come alone, or you die." Tom checked his work. "Love makes even the strongest Alphas stupid."
Above them, something crashed. Snarls echoed through the house.
Tom smiled. "Right on time."
The basement door exploded inward. Kai descended like an avenging god, his eyes pure silver with rage. He took in the scene—Luna chained, Tom with the grimoire, the ritual symbols—and his power filled the room like a physical force.
"Release her."
"Certainly. Just need a small trade." Tom held up a ritual blade. "Your life for hers. Simple."
"Kai, don't" Luna's words cut off as the collar constricted.
"Stop!" Kai stepped forward. "You're killing her!"
"Yes, I am. Few more minutes and she's gone." Tom's voice was conversational. "Unless you take her place. The blade to your heart, your power to me, the collar disappears. She lives."
Kai's eyes found Luna's. She saw him weighing options, calculating chances. Then she saw him make his choice.
"Fine."
"No!" Luna fought against the chains, silver burning through her skin. "Kai, please!"
"Look at me," Kai commanded softly. Even dying, she couldn't resist. "Do you trust me?"
"Yes, but"
"Then trust me now." He approached Tom. "The ritual. How do I know it works?"
Tom opened the grimoire, showing a page. "Blood oath. Unbreakable. You can feel its truth."
Kai studied it, then nodded. "Begin."
Tom started chanting in a language that hurt to hear. The symbols on the floor glowed red. The ritual blade floated between them, waiting.
"Your oath," Tom commanded.
"I offer my life for hers. My power as payment for her freedom." Kai's voice was steady.
The magic accepted it, bonds of light wrapping around him. Tom continued chanting, power building. Luna felt the collar loosening—it was working.
"Now," Tom said, eyes gleaming with triumph. "The blade."
Kai reached for it.
That's when Luna smelled them, pack. Shadowmoon wolves, surrounding the house. Kai hadn't come alone after all.
Tom smelled it too. "You broke the deal!"
"No. I came alone. They followed without my knowledge." Kai smiled coldly. "But here's what you missed, witch-blood. That ritual? It requires a willing sacrifice. And I'm not willing anymore."
He grabbed the blade, but instead of plunging it into his heart, he threw it with deadly accuracy. It sank into Tom's shoulder, disrupting his concentration.
The ritual magic backlashed. Tom screamed as his own spell turned on him, the power he'd been trying to steal burning through him instead. The grimoire burst into flames.
"No!" Tom reached for it, but the fire was supernatural, consuming everything.
The collar around Luna's neck cracked. Then shattered.
Her wolf roared back to life, three years of suppression ending in a tsunami of power. She shifted instantly, silver chains snapping like thread. Her wolf was different—larger, eyes now gold-amber with flecks of silver.
Tom tried to run. Luna didn't let him.
Her jaws found his throat, and she felt no mercy for the man who'd destroyed so many lives. His blood tasted of lies and dark magic.
When it was over, when Tom lay still, she shifted back. Kai caught her as she swayed, his arms strong and sure.
"You clever, incredible Alpha," she whispered against his chest.
"I told you. You're mine to save." He pulled back to look at her, and his eyes held heat that had nothing to do with battle. "And now that you're free..."
He kissed her. It was claiming and possession and promise all at once. The mate bond, fully freed, snapped into place with almost painful intensity. Mine, their wolves sang together. Ours. Complete.
When they broke apart, both breathing hard, Luna became aware of their audience. Shadowmoon wolves filled the basement, Zara at their head.
"Alpha Chen is here," Zara announced. "He wants answers about his son."
Kai looked at Luna. "Your choice. Face him or run?"
Luna straightened, feeling her wolf's strength, her mate's support. "I'm done running."
They climbed from the basement to find Alpha Chen waiting, looking older than she remembered, eyes hollow with madness Tom had mentioned.
"You killed my son," Chen said, focused on Luna.
"Both your sons are dead," Luna replied steadily. "One innocent, murdered by his brother. One guilty, executed for his crimes."
"Lies!"
"Truth." Kai stepped forward. "Tom confessed before he died. He killed Jason, framed Luna, and cursed you when he murdered his witch mother."
Chen stumbled, his beta catching him. "Tom's mother wasn't..."
"She was. And that curse? It's been driving you mad for years." Luna felt pity for the broken Alpha. "Jason would want you to seek help, to heal. To lead with justice, not paranoia."
Chen looked at her, and for a moment, sanity flickered in his eyes. "You loved my boy. Jason. You loved him truly."
"I did. He was a good man. He deserved better than what his brother did to him."
Chen nodded slowly, then looked at his beta. "Take me home. The pack needs... I need..." He stopped, confused.
"We'll help," the beta assured him, leading Chen away. "The pack will heal from this."
As Riverdale wolves departed, Kai turned to Luna. "You're free now. You could go anywhere."
Luna smiled, pulling him down for another kiss. "I'm exactly where I want to be. Home."
But even as Kai held her, even as the pack celebrated, Luna felt something wrong. The collar was gone, but she could still feel its echo. Dark magic left marks, and in her wolf's eyes, she glimpsed something that shouldn't be there, a flicker of red, like embers.
Tom's last gift, she realized. His magic hadn't just disappeared.
Some of it had gone into her.
