The Unexpected Truth

Nan Qiao continued, “Without you, their little sweatshop would still be a sweatshop. They wouldn’t have moved from bumfuck nowhere to Beverly Hills. Richard Johnson wouldn’t be a big shot out in the Valley. It’s all thanks to you working behind the scenes! Otherwise, with his business smarts, he'd be broke. Big shot, my ass!” "It's because he's a total moron, constantly causing problems and forcing you to clean up his mess! If it wasn't for him, you'd be the one running the empire! But these years, you've sacrificed everything for them..." "Whatever," Emily said lazily, as if it didn’t matter. "Money's easy; it's always there for the taking." "I feel bad for you! They left you with your grandma, barely ever showing up!" "Then they found Melissa and ditched you." "They're heartless bastards!" "Enough about them. I need more Yi Xin Cao than one plant," Emily switched topics. "Keep your eyes peeled at the upcoming auctions. Let me know if anything surfaces." "Will do." They hung up. Emily’s phone buzzed. It was her assistant. 【Boss! Huge order!】 【Some super-rich dude ordered a hundred outfits, a hundred bags, and a hundred pairs of shoes for his daughter, all needed today.】 【Sent everything from the warehouse! We're wiped out!】 【When can you crank out more designs?】 【Urgent! Urgent! Urgent! Seriously, I can't stress this enough!】 Emily tapped out a reply: 【A few days.】 【Okay, I’ll wait. I’m on my way to this rich guy’s pad. Hope his daughter isn't a total dog; she can't waste your clothes…】 Emily was taken aback: 【You’re delivering it yourself?】 【Such a huge order deserves top-notch service, right?】 Putting her phone down, Emily wondered what kind of family needed that many clothes, bags, and shoes. Were they opening a department store? A luxury SUV pulled up to the mansion. Mr. Gao rushed forward, opening the door. "Miss Jessica, welcome home! It's going to be a lot more lively with you here." Jessica stepped out, looking like a million bucks—perfect skin, incredible figure, flawless face. Her bangs were pulled back, showing her forehead. Her eyes sparkled with confidence. Servants carried her luggage inside, followed by Mr. Gao. “Miss Jessica has been busy with college exams. I didn’t want to bother her. Now that she’s finished and is back from her trip with her friends, I finally get to chat with her…" Mr. Gao whispered. "What is it?" Jessica had always looked pretty average, but being pampered her whole life gave her a glamorous aura. Even her voice had a spoiled-brat quality. She wore a lavish dress, the layers adding to her elegance. Add the designer bag and jewelry, and she was a walking advertisement for high-end brands—a real princess. "It's just…" Before Mr. Gao could finish, Jessica saw a dozen people in the garden setting up clothes and bags. Servants were blowing up balloons and hanging string lights on the trees. Even Mrs. Zhang was helping out. Mrs. Zhang was Jessica's personal maid. Ever since she was born, Mrs. Zhang fed her, put her to bed, and was her constant companion. Mrs. Zhang's job was taking care of Jessica. So she had a higher status than the other servants. They were like mother and daughter. Jessica smiled when she saw her. "Mrs. Zhang!" "Miss Jessica's back!" Mrs. Zhang beamed. "I've missed you so much! You shouldn't have stayed in the dorm; look how skinny you are!" "You've lost weight too, Mrs. Zhang. Missing me made you thin?" "You little rascal!" Mrs. Zhang laughed and looked her over. "You're thinner, but you're glowing!" Jessica smiled, looking at everyone. "Is this a surprise from Mom and Dad?" A reward for finishing college exams? A coming-of-age celebration? A graduation gift? Whatever it was, it was amazing. Every girl loves pretty clothes and bags, especially so many limited editions, all set up like a fashion show. Her parents spoiled her rotten! Even with five brothers, she was still their princess. Mrs. Zhang looked uncomfortable. "I'll go take a look," Jessica said excitedly. But Mrs. Zhang stopped her. "Miss Jessica, those things… aren't for you." She exchanged a glance with Mr. Gao. They didn't want to hurt her. Mrs. Zhang was the one who had to speak up. "Mrs. Zhang, I know you weren't expecting me back so soon, and I know you haven’t finished setting up. It’s okay; I’ll pretend I didn’t see anything, and you can carry on. I won’t say anything." "Miss Jessica…" Jessica went inside happily. Since she’s the only girl, it had to be for her, right? Her parents just wanted to surprise her, and the servants couldn't admit it. That’s normal. Jessica entered the main hall. Dozens of display racks lined the walls, each dress and bag seemingly custom-made for her. Jessica wandered through the displays, her heart filled with happiness. Mrs. Zhang opened her mouth to explain, but seeing Jessica's joyful expression, she couldn’t ruin the moment. Upstairs, Emily finished her work and was about to rest when a knock came at the door.
