The morning after. The phrase itself felt like a luxury, a quiet promise after years of constant vigilance. I woke tangled in Ward’s arms, the sunlight painting stripes across the room, the air thick with the scent of us and the lingering peace of the clubhouse. Downstairs, I could hear the muffled sounds of breakfast being made – the clatter of pans, cheerful voices, the comforting sizzle of bacon. It was a symphony of normalcy that felt both surreal and deeply welcome. The victory against the Crown was still a fresh, exhilirating memory, a testament to our strength and resilience, and now, the world felt like it was ours to navigate, free from shadows.
Ward stirred beside me, his arm tightening around my waist, his breath warm against my back. “Morning,” he murmured, his voice still thick with sleep, a low rumble that vibrated through me.
“Morning,” I whispered back, nuzzling closer. I wriggled free from his embrace, the t-shirt I was wearing – still his, soft and comforting – a tangible reminder of the night. I padded over to his dresser, pulling out some fresh clothes, a simple pair of jeans and a plain top.
As Ward got dressed in his own jeans and a fresh t-shirt, he pulled out his phone. He tapped a few messages, a smile playing on his lips as he typed. “Going to send Isabella a text,” he announced, his eyes meeting mine in the mirror. “Told her to bring you some clothes, by the way. Can’t have you running around in my wardrobe forever, as much as I like seeing you in it.”
I playfully swatted his arm. “This is pretty comfortable, actually. And it smells like you.”
“I know,” he grinned, his eyes twinkling. “And I like it. But we’re going shopping. Birthday treat. You need some new things. And I was thinking… maybe you and Isabella could join me and Nate for lunch afterwards? If you’re up for it. Celebrating properly, you know?”
I nodded eagerly, a genuine smile spreading across my face. “Sounds perfect. I’d love that. It’ll be good to spend some time with them, now that… everything’s settled. Now that we’re finally safe.” The absence of the Crown’s shadow still felt like a physical lightness, a freedom I was still getting used to, and the thought of a relaxed outing with Isabella and Nate felt like the perfect way to embrace it.
Ward sent the text, then turned back to me, his gaze soft. “Whatever you want to do. That’s the idea now, isn’t it? Whatever we want. No more living by anyone else’s rules.”
He tucked his phone away, and his arms came around me, pulling me into a warm, solid embrace. “No more running,” he murmured against my hair, his voice filled with a quiet certainty. “Just… us. And whatever comes next. We get to decide that now.”
“Just us,” I echoed, closing my eyes, breathing him in. The future felt bright, open, and for the first time, entirely our own. The weight of past struggles had been replaced by the exhilarating lightness of possibility, and I knew, with Ward by my side, we could face anything.
