Benjamin Mangione took the stand like he belonged there. Tailored suit. Relaxed posture. One hand rested lightly on the rail, his wedding ring, placed on his right hand for his deceased spouse, caught the light conspicuously. He smiled at the jury the way men smile when they’re used to being believed. Maura Klein approached him with deference. Not warmth. Respect. “Mr. Mangione,” she said. “You’re Scarlet Mangione’s father.” “I am.” “You’ve heard a great deal of testimony today about alleged abuse.” “Yes.” Maura nodded. “Did you ever physically harm your daughter?” Benny didn’t hesitate. “No.” Not a flicker. Not a stumble. “You never struck her.” “No.” “You never threatened her.” “No.” “You never caused injuries that required medical attention.” “No.” Maura lifted a folder.
