Chapter 1: I Want a Divorce

622 Words
The streetlights flickered on as night settled over the city. Under the neon glow, City B’s nightlife was just starting to buzz. Lydia Harper curled up on a plush leather sofa, absorbed in a cheesy soap opera. Handsome men, glamorous women—nothing deep, just something to pass the time. Then— BANG! The door slammed open. Alexander Blackwood stumbled in, slamming it shut behind him. The sharp smell of alcohol hit the room, making Lydia frown. He staggered over and dropped onto the sofa beside her. “I want a divorce.” His voice was flat. Empty. “Nora’s coming back. This house… it’s yours.” He pulled a document and pen from his briefcase and tossed them onto the coffee table. “Sign it.” Without hesitation, Lydia picked it up, scribbled her signature in a few quick strokes, and tossed it back. Alexander froze for a moment, then shoved the papers into his briefcase. He pulled out a bank card and set it on the table. “There’s five million on this. Enough for you to live comfortably for the rest of your life.” “Fine.” Her eyes never left the TV screen. On the surface, it looked almost polite. Casual. Like a normal couple making small talk. But only Lydia knew— Her heart was breaking. Still, she held her composure. Calm. Untouchable. So that was it. Three years. Three long, ridiculous, one-sided years… finally over. She could love—but not at the cost of her dignity. She wasn’t some desperate woman begging for affection. This was the last shred of pride she had left. Alexander stared at her indifferent expression. How easily she signed. How quickly she agreed. And something inside him snapped. A sudden, burning rage surged through his chest. He hated this about her. That cold, untouchable attitude. Like she looked down on everything. Even him. Suddenly, he grabbed the remote from her hand and slammed it onto the floor. CRASH! The TV went dark. His lips curled into a cold, sharp smile. His handsome face radiated hostility. “Don’t act so calm,” he sneered. “I know you’ve been dying to dump me and jump into someone else’s bed. Shameless.” His words cut deep. Like salt rubbed into an open wound. Lydia’s composure cracked. Tears streamed down her smooth, pale cheeks. She looked at him, eyes shining, voice trembling but firm. “What do you take me for?” “You wanted a divorce. I just agreed. What else do you want from me?” A bitter laugh escaped her lips. “Or what—did you fall for me and now regret it?” For a moment— Just a moment— Alexander almost lost control. Looking at her tear-streaked face. Fragile… so beautiful… he wanted to pull her into his arms. But he forced himself back. His voice turned ice-cold. “Don’t flatter yourself.” “I could never love you.” “The only one I’ve ever loved is Nora.” Lydia let out a soft, hollow laugh. “Good.” “Then remember what you said today.” His jaw tightened. “I’m leaving. I’ll never come back.” “Goodbye.” The words left his mouth—and regret flickered in his chest. Why did he say that? Wouldn’t it have been better to just walk away… without looking back? Lydia, still furious, said nothing. Alexander turned and left. Moments later, the sound of a car engine echoed outside. Only then did it hit her— They were truly done. From now on, they meant nothing to each other. Her shoulders shook. She buried her face in her arms— And broke down completely.
