Chapter Eight: Secrets Beneath the Moonlight

1106 Words
The forest was unusually quiet that evening. Eva walked beside Kyle, their footsteps soft on the mossy path. The cool night air brushed her skin, and above them, the moon was full—round and glowing like a silent watcher in the sky. They hadn’t spoken much since leaving the village, but the silence wasn’t awkward. It was thick with unspoken thoughts, things neither of them was ready to say out loud. Kyle stopped near a stream. The water glittered silver in the moonlight. He knelt down, cupped his hands, and let the cold water pass through his fingers. “You brought me here for a reason,” Eva said quietly, stepping beside him. Kyle nodded. “There’s something I want to show you. Something I should’ve told you sooner.” He stood and turned to face her. The shadows carved gentle lines across his face, but his eyes were soft, searching hers for understanding. “I trust you,” Eva said before he could speak. A flicker of surprise crossed his face, followed by a small smile. “I never expected to hear that. Not from someone like you.” “Someone like me?” “A mortal. A healer. Someone who should see me as a danger.” Eva tilted her head. “You’re not a danger to me, Kyle. You never have been.” Kyle hesitated for a moment, then extended his hand. “Come with me. There’s something you need to see to truly understand who I am.” Without fear, Eva took his hand. They walked deeper into the woods, past trees older than any living memory, until they reached a stone arch hidden behind thick ivy. It shimmered faintly in the moonlight, glowing with ancient magic. Kyle touched the stones, whispering words in a language Eva didn’t know. The arch lit up, a portal flickering to life. “This is the threshold to my world,” he said. “The Fae Realm. I’m breaking a law by bringing you here, but I can’t keep secrets from you anymore.” Eva’s heart thudded in her chest. “Why now?” “Because I care for you too much to lie,” he whispered. “And because I fear what’s coming.” Without another word, they stepped through. The Fae Realm was unlike anything Eva had ever seen. The trees shimmered with colors not found in the mortal world—violets and golds and deep emerald greens. The air felt alive, pulsing with soft energy. Light danced in the sky like northern lights, even though there were no stars here. “It’s… beautiful,” Eva breathed. Kyle watched her carefully. “This place has its beauty. But it also holds its dangers.” They walked along a glowing path, past plants that glowed softly and rivers that hummed with magic. After a while, they came to a clearing surrounded by crystal-like trees. In the center was a large, ancient stone, covered in glowing symbols. “This is the Stone of Oaths,” Kyle explained. “It’s where the royal family swears loyalty to the realm, where truths are bound in magic. I brought you here because I want you to know everything.” Eva stepped forward, brushing her fingers over the stone. “Then tell me.” Kyle took a deep breath. “My name isn’t just Kyle. It’s Kyrellion of the Silver Flame. I’m the last heir of the Fae High Court. My kingdom was betrayed, and my parents were killed. I was forced to hide in the mortal world to survive. The magic you feel around me—it’s a remnant of what once was. But now, those who want to destroy me have found my trail again.” Eva’s mouth went dry. “So that’s why you saved that girl back in the village. You knew they were looking for you.” “Yes,” he said. “And now they know I’m close.” Eva turned to him. “So what happens now?” “I don’t know,” he said honestly. “But whatever comes, I wanted you to know the truth. You deserve that.” She looked at him, her heart racing. “And what about us?” Kyle stepped closer. “That’s the one thing I’m sure of.” He reached out, brushing a lock of hair from her face. His touch was gentle, his eyes full of a quiet longing. She didn’t move away. “I tried to fight this,” he said. “Tried to believe I could walk away from you. But I can’t. Not anymore.” Her breath hitched. “I feel it too.” His hand cupped her cheek. “Eva, if you stay by my side, you’ll be hunted too. Loving me means danger, pain… and possibly exile from your world.” “Then I’ll face it,” she said, voice steady. “Because walking away from you would hurt more than anything else.” Their lips met in the quiet moonlight of the Fae Realm. It wasn’t rushed. It was soft, hesitant at first, then deeper, as if all the longing and uncertainty of the past days poured into that single moment. When they pulled apart, Kyle leaned his forehead against hers. “You have no idea what this means to me.” Eva smiled. “Then show me. All of it.” They sat together beneath the crystal trees, talking for hours. Kyle told her stories of his world, the wars, the betrayals, the magic that once held balance. Eva shared her childhood, her dreams, the loneliness she often carried despite her quiet strength. By the time the sun—or whatever light passed for dawn in this place—began to rise, they had learned more about each other than they ever thought possible. But peace never lasts long in worlds at war. A ripple of dark energy broke through the forest edge, and Kyle’s body tensed. “They found us,” he whispered, standing swiftly and pulling Eva to her feet. From the shadows came a figure cloaked in black, eyes glowing with cold, cruel light. “Kyrellion,” the figure hissed. “You broke the old laws. You brought a mortal here.” Eva stepped behind Kyle, but didn’t cower. The figure raised a hand, energy crackling around it. Kyle summoned a shield of flame, his silver markings glowing along his arms. “You’ll not touch her,” he said, voice laced with power. The forest trembled. The trees cried with light. And the battle for love—and survival—had truly begun.
